National Novel Writers Month....or nanowrimo.com
Literally, write a novel in a month. eek

Anyone participating?
I'm writing...I always write (which would love some discussion on that too) but anyone doing Nanowrimo?

Just thinking about it gives me writers block. wink
I bombed last year on it for the same reason.

write a novel in a month? Wow, it would have to be short. It takes me awhile to get a few pages done, let alone start a concept and learn about the characters.
A month? Is there a website? Cause it would be interesting to see the novels that come out of this

if it was International I'd be interested.

Good luck.

a.) The NaNoWriMo IS international!!! It's more like a person challenge of sorts!

b.) The "novel" at the end of the month is really a loose goal. To complete a NaNoWriMo, you are completing 50,000 words in the month of November, hopefully finishing the story. Technically, and this is a big technically, you can complete the NaNoWriMo without completing a story. (I'm currently sitting at 8,500 words-ish, and there's no way I'm going to finish the story I've got plotted out).

c.) I'M TOTALLY IN THIS YEAR.

Last year, I bailed after I spent a week sick in the beginning of the month and ended up pathetically behind the mark at 2 and a half weeks in with only 10,000 words and writer's block.

Ms. Pele, what would you be writing about?!?

Inquiring minds are dying to know!

I'm writing about a somewhat crime-noir about through different lives and times as they're running away from both the sins they had committed and the prophecies regarding their existence.

Sorry Jo, didn't get back in time to explain it. smile

I think it's www.nanowrimo.com if not google it. wink I've not read the novels that came out of it. They also have said they don't expect people to put out award winning novels. It's supposed to be a way to get writers kick started.

Kathain, I have no idea my word count. I write in hardcopy at work while waiting for data to process so I don't make the transition.
Mine is a variation of the crossroads mythos (which has fascinated me for years) and it being a family legacy and not something you simply call up. I based it at these crossroads that was on my bus route for school growing up. They always felt spooky to me.
There is no way I will finish it by the end of November but I love the challenge. smile

(and this isn't counting the other stories I have hanging on my office wall! lol)

The one thing that is putting me off is the fact that as long as you get to 50,000 words you're a winner. And no one will read it. They just delete it as soon as they've checked it.
I guess it's all for a personal goal really isn't it. Self-motivation time!

You know though Jo, last year I bombed that whole word count thing, BUT I worked on (what I thought was) a great idea...and people have read what I have and love it. So something good was born of it and it was a win for me.
And if you want people to read it, well, that would be why I started this thread...to fill in those gaps! wink

Froggy...do it! You know you wanna!!! *tempting you like a vial to a crack ho*

I didn't set aside time last year, and I think that was my downfall. Now my goal is to write one, single side of a lined piece of paper each day, knowing that if I get on a roll, I won't stop. Yesterday was three pages squeezed in at work and I wanted to keep going so today should be more (I hope).

My friend also does this cool thing we call seeds: where she gives an idea and we write *super short* stories (as in, less than 2000 wds usually). I can not begin to tell you how this writing exercise has helped, and how it has kept me motivated when I feel blocked and one of those shorts is up for publication. It's really awesome..though she is waning in it. Perhaps I will carry it on in my writing LJ, but we can always throw those out here as well.

Might help, no?

A normal one would go (and I think this is an exact one)

Topic: Jerricho By Moonlight
Genre: Fiction

due: next thursday

The point was to keep us creative, concise and functioning in deadlines.
The deadline part always threw me. lol

Btw..that Jerricho one was a bitch for me! wink

Whatcha think? Worth a shot here? Maybe we can put up one a week or so?

Funny, last week I started work on the first piece of fiction I've attempted to write in years. Writing was always my main creative outlet until I started spinning. Didn't realize that now was nanowrimo. It's a concept I've had in my head for over ten years but the right characters/story haven't really fallen in place till recently. I might actually be able to get the story out in a month, knowing I can go back later to flesh things out. Intriguing...

I'm writing about alternate realities, spiritual unfolding, reconnection with nature, the end of the world, drugs and dancing, drag queens and circus freaks in a near-future media saturated world in which a war is being fought for specious reasons...

It's going to be absolutely god-awful or pretty good I think. The first time I tried writing it, it was close but no cigar. It seems clearer now, but I might just be delusional. shrug

Sounds interesting!

I haven't written creatively for years... I used to all the time and I used to be quite good at it, but then I went through a phase where even if my friends and teachers thought my writing was good, it all seemed a bit pretentious and lacking in depth to me.

Now I can't remember the techniques and mechanisms that make for a good story... factual essays I can do easily, give me a subject or argument and a bit of time to research it and I can always produce an 'A' grade essay, I can write them so they are enjoyable to read and well structured, but just can't carry the same skills across to creative writing. frown

.... actually.... sweetie..... the fab Miss Pele.... I already have a community set for short fiction challenges. My friend and I used to do them all the time and set up a community just for the two of us to store them. Sadly, we were more apt to go back and forth with out challenges on paper, so only a few made them onto the community. But, then, we had a falling out and I haven't used it since.

And we have Seeds on LJ, but doing it here would open it to all the lovely HoPpers who aren't on LJ, and don't want to make the jump (and somedays I don't blame them).

Don't have to post the stories here, just use it for inspiration. wink

Khan that sounds like...alot.
I'd be interested in reading it once done! biggrin

Okay...motivation...

When the story is there and time is not, what gets you motivated to actually sit and commit it to paper?

For me it will start appearing in my dreams and driving me crazy (like now since I haven't written on it in a couple days)

Oh and I took my word count, around 5000....1/10th the way there! ubblol

Actually, today, I got really inspired by an old tip from a teacher: experience something out of the ordinary for yourself. She actually made us do little homework assignments about that to get our creative juices flowing (*like watch a movie you think you would hate, read a book or snippet from an author you loathe, make an homage to a painting you can't stand to look at, etc.).

So, I watched Cruel Intentions before going into work (I could never sit through more than five minutes or it), and ended up finding myself pleasantly surprised. It was an intriguing movie and gave me lots to think about.

Current Word Count: 16,222

*on my honor!*

But I'm probably behind you when it comes to wrapping up the plot, though. I've been getting bogged down by bits of evidence that need breadcrumbing for the reader. wink
