Well, I checked out the other threads about the low wave, none of them helped. Specifically-

When you turn your body while spinning one poi, I don't understand what I'm supposed to do with my wrists. Lets say I'm spinning one poi, like the beginning of the video. I have it going counter clockwise. So, I turn my body, it either hits my leg or before putting the poi somewhat behind me, I involuntarily slow it down and begin spinning it the other direction, not smooth at all. Anyone have some advice?

First thing that's worth checking is the "and begin spinning it the other direction"

This might be a bit confusing, but bear with me smile

If you're spinning the poi CCW, then turn (as in the video), it will be spinning CW. However, from the front - the poi hasn't changed direction. It's only changed relative to you.

So if you were to exaggerate the body-movement just using one poi, you'd be doing a beat in front of you inward/ACW/CCW, then another outward/CW and repeating.

The final aim of the low wave is to stay facing forward with most of the movement coming from the wrist. Much as in chasing the sun or the mexican wave where the wrist simply flops over the shoulder and back, the low-wave can be reduced to just a wrist movement.

Starting with right hand going outward/upward/CW (which I think is easiest), yry leading with the back of your hand - so it would go palm-facing-into-the-body -> palm behind the back (ish) facing your kidney umm

Did that help?

[Side note]

If you're learning from the "Art of Poi" or the free lessons here, you might not have noticed that the first explanation is done with an inwards butterfly, the actual move at the end is done with an outwards butterfly smile

However to you (the watcher) the poi are spinning in the same direction, it's just the spinner is facing away from you, so the inward/outward is flipped. Which is the whole "relative to you" aspect I was trying to explain at first smile

OK, the easiest way for me to explain is from the beginning. On the free lessons it can be confusing as the direction of the poi can be unclear when it goes past the person...eventually after staring for what seems like years, usually you realise its actually going a different way and then it all clicks into place.

First of all, do this as slow as the poi will let you, as it is a lot easier and you have more control.

Right, say you are spinning same-time forwards. You decide you want to turn towards your right shoulder 180 degrees. When your poi have just reached the top of the circle and are starting to come back down - this is the time to turn 90 degrees to your right. Whilst doing this pull your left arm so that it can finish the circle behind your back whilst your right poi makes a circle in front of you. You should feel sandwiched in between the two and they should be along the same wall plane (path) in the same direction as before. They remain the same, you just move alongside them.

(you should be able to keep spinning these circles - one infront and one behind - until comfortable to complete the second half...)

Then for the second half of the turn. This is slightly more tricky as when the poi are at the top of their circle, you need to turn 90 degrees and pull your left arm to your left and your right to your right. Basically, your left is moving forward, whilst your right goes back. Then you've done your low turn.

When you are ready you will be able to work your way down until the turn is completed within 2 spins - the starting and ending. Also, remember it may seem like your poi are in a different direction, but they are the same - you change. Because you are facing the opposite direction, if you started spinning forwards, you will now be spinning backwards.

Talking solely about wrists and forgetting the poi: your left starts by your left, goes behind your back, then swings back to your left. Your right starts by your right, goes infront of you, then swings back to your right.

This move can be done towards your right or left shoulder, spinning forwards-backwards or backwards to forwards and in same or split time - work on variations - will help you to flow.

REMEMBER if changing eg. from right to left, the movements of the wrists are mirrored. Your right is in front when turning to the right, but your left will be infront when turning to the left etc.

Good luck! Hope this all makes sense! if not just let me know. smile

Thank you Durbs & B fairy...I'm in the process of teaching myself this move and you've helped tremendously. *Muah*

Yeah I'm still a lil' perplexed though...do you need to know how to do a btb butterfly in order to get one wrist behind your back? I also am having a hard time visualizing getting my wrists "upside down" and btb. Help a sista! LOL

Hi LL,

No you don't need to know how to do a BTB butterfly in order to do the low wave. That being said, as you twist your body from side to side, your wrists will go somewhat behind your back, each one in turn. (Imagine a flamenco dancer sweeping her skirt from side to side).

I will not go into details bc they have already been smashingly covered, but I will add one little thing: there are two ways to make the poi swing upwards behind you. 1- extend your arm a bit with your palms facing up, or 2- bend your elbow outwards (away from your body) and swing your poi with the back of your hand towards your backside. I would suggest to try both methods; Lord knows I was not able to figure the low wave out until I tried the second method. ubbidea

Thank you Kusanagi...I pictured myself as a flamenco dancer and did it almost instantly!

Faith, I think I figured it out by mistake...

I was messing about trying to find a transition from FW circles to BW butterfly. Swinging in FW circles with hands at waist level, open your arms 45 more degrees outwards. Poi will now swing partly behind your back in equal time. Flip both your wrists to bring poi in front of you in BW butterfly. Keep going back to front and front to back and you got your equal time low wave (I think... *g*)

One thing though: Keep one hand slightly forward at all times to avoid collisions. As in front, so in back and all that wink Also, it helps if you roll back and forth on the balls of your feet. (If your planes are tight, getting your booty out of the way of the poi is in order. biggrin)

i worked out this move by turning to start with, like as in the high turn. when i had worked out the movement of my wrists by turning 180 with the poi, i then could drill the wrist movements when i was stood still until i got it right

its a good move, opens alot of doors i think!

best of luck xx

both the poi are doing butterfly in the wall plane, alternating in front and behind you, with your hands (roughly) by your hips

there used to be a video in free lessons, but I think it got lost in the update...
