A banana by any other name would be as bananary!

Dont they also say that banana helps to naturally replenish the cerotonin in your brain? It may be a myth I dont know, its just something I heard.

Banana milkshake rocks!

Doc you just defined nuts in part....*wibble* or a pine cone.
a true fruit does not contain a swollen pericarp i.e. fleshy bit.
whereas a "false" fruit does. it is a very grey area.

A couple of balls short of a full cascade... or maybe a few cards short of a deck... we'll see how this all fans out.

banana = non-herb

bananas, say it with me people, bananas!

I think the banana is and can be what ever it wants to be. Fruit or herb, will a re-classification in our mental dictionaries change how often we do or do not eat them. I think not!

But I'm gonna go with the herb thing because i'v always thought of it as a fruit and a change is as good as a holiday.

*runs home to take bananas out of fridge and places them lovingly between sage and oregano in the cupboard*

I like making banana milkshakes with chocolate ice cream..yummmm..

Anyway...the Banana "Tree" is an herbacious plant because its stalk doesn't not contain woody materials. No wood= Not a tree.

The Banana itself is concidered a fruit, though the ones we eat from stores are sterile, so the seeds are not large.

Oxford online and thestraightdope.com are great resources on figuring out what food goes where and why (and most anything else), though the whole statement of a nut being a hard, oily, single-double encased fruit screwed with my head.

And a fruit is technically not categorized by the seeds being *inside* because there are several berries that would not qualify, it is simply the seed bearing part.
In my herbalism class I learned that vegetables are herbacious plants cultivated for the edible use of it's parts, whereas a fruit is only the seedy part. So, alot of plants which are fruits can also be vegetables but vegetables do not so easily shift to be categorized as fruits. It's nuts! wink
