I'm certainly no DJ but would like to try my hand at some beat matching and mixing. Basically I'd like to make the "NYC OL SKOOL HIPHOP HULAHOOP MIXTAPE 2006" so I can shake my booty and my hoops to some quality Hip Hop jams this summer. I've got my MP3s but just playing them one after the other doesn't do it for me anymore.

The only software I'd ever even played with is the EJay line but even that was a while ago.

Any suggestions on free software? Or the best to buy?

Well, shall we go?

there are plenty of these type of mp3 mixers out there, i mess around with music and synths etc on my pc all the time and found this the most versatile and easiest to use

Oh yes... MIXING software. Thanks.

I'll look into those.

AHHH! VirtualDJ is $250?! (Special online price of $150?)

I guess that's what good software costs these days huh?

Reason is a wll good program. Tad on the pricy side though. eBay is a good place to look for bootleg CDs though... but that's naughty (but oh so sweetly cheap) ubbangel

Yummy

But you can rip sounds from other sounds and remix them!

'course, then you need to get more software...

What a gip!

Ooh I was going to suggest Soundforge. But my idea for getting a copy wasn't as practical as Dunc's....

Just finished downloading Audacity and got a quick play.

Is there anything more fun that beatmatching?

Well, actually I can think of quite a few more things but not when I'm home alone on a school night.

On a tangent- I used to use Cool Edit Pro which eventually was bought over by Adobe to be reborn as Adobe Audition.. It's a good mp3 editing and multitracking software.. Pretty neat, but more for creating individual tracks than mixing..

You could always switch to Ubuntu and get the ubunt studio packages. Lots of good editing software for audio and video. Look for a ubuntu studio cd image online from ubuntu.com and run it as a live cd to do your editing if you don't want to install it. I run w dual boot windows xp with ubuntu 9.1 hope this helps as there are not many good options for windows that are free. free.

There's loads of good open source software out there now.
(Itch is pretty poor by comparison)

For DJ's you've got https://www.xwax.co.uk/
(linux) & https://www.mixxx.org/
(all platforms - I've used it loads) and for editing you have an endless array with https://audacity.sourceforge.net/
still being one of the most reliable (but there are much more advanced software suites out there now).

After 4 and a bit years nothing has changed a great deal really so all the links above are still relevent.
