Posted: I'm trying to teach myself how to make all the phases of the moon with my poi and don't know how to go about. full moons are easy and new moons are easier but the gibbous and quarter I'm not sure about. I'm thinking that I should try and tuck (or still or whatever you call it) but when I do that, the poi just continue on there path. On the gibbous, I try to start a regular circle and push back when it gets to the top but it speeds up the poi and makes another circle... I geuss all I need help on is making a quarter moon then.

i don't know how to make a crescent.
Unless you had a spotlight on you, and you were spinning enormous flags.
but i don't really think that's what you're going for.

Posted: Full Moon is easy as you said but a cresent moon is doable
It would require a side stall leading into a reverse spin and then an up stall leading to a normal spin or vice versa with some creative hand movement (something like a lopsided D)to prevent the poi from tracing its path however your cresent moon would be tilted. I've tried it coz u mentioned it and it works but it looks a little bit sloppy so it may not be worth the effort but thats your call to make.
Alterantivly you can just do diagonal up stalls with the poi traveling under you arm (and creative hand movment) but then the cresent ends up under your arm and I belive that this isn't the desired effect (tho it is less sloppy).
Hope that helped.

Posted: not quite like the pic and not atomic either
Just swing your poi back and forth while moving you hand in a D shape (rotate the D by 90 degrees so that the straight edge is at the top) and you will se what I'm getting at
