wahey! dont you adore it when you find a realy simply move that when lit looks fecking amazing??!!

maybe its been done a billion times but was on my blades last nite and was practising toe spins. stopped, took off boots and picked up staff.

did overhead palm spin then without thinking spun around on my toe in the opposite direction. The momentum of the staff goes crazy, slows then appears to not move!

then paused spinning, heli throw then did high roundhouse thing with body (dont know martial art terms) caught staff and did the opposite toe spin again

aww man, i love it!!

(only prob is its a bit balletic, any ideas how to make it a bit more hardcore????)

Even more simple. It's really just my practice routine for helicopters, so I'm not sure what it looks like.

Anyway, I just turn my body the opposite way to the direction of the helicopter. Then I do a stall to go back the other way. Simple, but fun. When I get sick of that, I bring the staff down around the neck, body, whatever.

more fun with hele's

horisontal figure eights above the head and under the arm right? turn body 180 against the direction of the staff each time you transition. feels funny at first...

???horizontal figure's ???

Hmm...I've got to admit I can't see how a true horizontal figure 8 would work. As it's horizontal, one of the 'loops' of the 8 would have to be through the arm that is performing it.

could I have a little more information, now i'm intrigued...

My apologies if this seems pedantic, but that move isn't really a figure8.

The reason I want to distinguish it out, is that it may confuse people who think that it is the same motions and then get confused later on with other moves described in the same way (yes, the problem of text based descriptions of three dimensional art ).

The normal figure8 relies hevily on the elbow dipping underneath and then upwards over the forearm, with is only possible in the vertical plane (in m understanding anyway). It is the bicep arm (swiveling), a tiny amount of shoulder movement, forearm movements and wrist that make up the normal figure8.

The horizontal figure8 described, while looking similar, is actually a much smaller movement. The bicep arm goes up and down, swiveling a tiny amount, the shoulder stays straight and the motion is concetrated between the wrist and forearm and elbow.

Without a staff it look a bit like the birddance movements done horizontally.

Sorry if this sounds picky, but I'd just like tio clear this up in my mind, and that of any lurkers too.

(Big hello to all you guests out there!!!)

Charles, that's an interesting conviction. I think it really depends how you compare them.

If you are going from shoulder level down to hip level in the horizontal plane, then I think it's much the same movement, just in a different plane. Either out to the front a bit with a long staff, or to the side with a shorter (< 1m) staff, then the shoulders, arms and wrists still have full movement; it's just to the side instead of up and down. More of a snake dance than a bird dance.

But, if you are doing a full horizontal fig 8, going from the front to the back, at hip level, then yeah it different because you have to pull the staff around the body. Hope this makes sense

front to back of course is diffrent, more like a horisontal pinwheel. I dont really see any diffrence in that with both moves your describing a figure eight with the end of the staff, I have no idea what you elbow is doing to your shoulder

owwwewww!!!

lol

nah i'm inventing this great new technique of "thumb jumping". all the normal tricks just going nowehere near ur thumb. Helps if you remember hitting aforesaid thumb will hurt like hell!

its pathetic really, its got an ickle sling and everything! So much for my "bruised" thumb!

"I Lurve Simple moves !!"
What simple like Toe spins on blades,
(one foot or two??)
anyway on blades, I never got more that 6 one foot or 42 revolutions two feet. for toe spins (smug mode, but I don't skate anymore)
so thats your challenge.
And mundo respect if you can do them.

No thumb moves (and no hand moves) are groovy, so you can keep spinning.

Its the simple moves that can sometimes look the best. Doing figure 8's (well half figure eights if you want to get technical) while spinning round as fast as you can can look unreal.

The horizontal not figure eight thing: I see little difference but perhaps i'm not reading right. Very technical.

I call this move the 'waiters plate' as it is the same movement that you can do when carrying drinks on a plate without spilling drinks.

Hate to be picky but, charles in your "Nameing Staff Moves" you said the figure 8 was a staff movement, no matter how the body accomplished it.
Personaly i've always thought of that moved as the corkscrew, just on-the-spot if ya get what i mean.

Q:Whay do you keep hiting yourself in the head with that hammer?A:Cos, it just feels so good when i stop...

heya glass, on ice i can do ten spins one foot, 61 two foot but on ground i'm pretty crap. Only normally 3 one foot and about 25 both feet.

i dont trust ground so its always been more diff for me!

but bloody hell, thats fantastic if ur doing that many... oh and i certinaly couldnt do that with staff!
