I've only recently discovered poi, just a rank beginner ordering my first practice set and figuring out how it all works... and I'm curious what's up with this obsession with fire.
Do people just hate tailed poi for some reason? In all the pictures and videos I've seen, and from the performances I've seen (though I've only seen glow poi and tailed in real life, not fire) I definitely liked the tailed poi a lot better, the flow of it was just plain hypnotic and nifty. That was the first type I ever saw actually, I walked all the way across a park just to figure out what the heck I was looking at.
Glow poi hurt, and don't have too much of an effect unless you're in the dark. Fire poi hurt when they hit you too, and also come with nasty smells, fuel stains, fuel spills, legal issues, safety equipment AND a person supervising nearby to help with safety, and all sorts of possibilities of maiming. You can't use them indoors, and unless you get into wacky chemicals they only come in one color.
Now, don't get me wrong, fire is cool (I'm descended from a long line of pyros myself), but are tailed poi really THAT boring? So they tangle sometimes, and they aren't too great outside in a wind, but for anything indoors shouldn't they be great?
Not trying to stir up a riot here if I'm unknowingly stepping into some kind of nasty sea of prejudice and resentment

About fire I agree fully; I don't like the constant assumption that spinning=fire either.
A lot of really good spinners either do very little, or no, fire stuff.
Not that fires bad; simply that spinning=fire is not true.
Tailed poi are OK; but most people who get into advanced poi end up not using them.
Sock poi are definitly a lot better for doing stuff like hyperloops, throws, one handed stuff etc.
I think if you're in a park and want the visual effect, then tails are useful; but 99% of my spinning is with socks with water ballons in the end.

Personally preference really.
A lot of people like the sound and the rush of doing it with fire.
I like a mix of everything....gnor made me some flags about two months ago and I love them...they are great for playing during the day.
I also love my fire at night.
I'm not big on LED or glow stuff though it is good for practicing at night so you can see what you are doing.

Have you played with the different poi types?? Maybe give yourself a few months and have a play with different toys. Taste can change over time and to what effect you want. Fire is heaps of fun but flags look good anytime and conepoi are great. Once you start to look at the moves and whats happening rather than straight visual impact of tails mightnt seem as important.

my first set of poi are tailed and i still like to use them when I practise- they're just a little light to isolate, and impossible to do any tangly move with. However, they are really nice to muck around with for throws- you have three times as many handles to catch! I still use socks when trying anything a bit more technical though. The thing about fire is that when you've nailed a new move with your practise poi AND your unlit fire poi, it's really nice to nail it while the poi are flaming: there's nothing like seeing a new move burn it's way through the night!

I agree with Gnorc. Tastes totally change over time. I've gone through non-tailed "practice" poi, cones, socks, fire (for a while I ONLY spun with fire, 3-4 times a week), and am just now starting to enjoy tails. For a long time, my tails just got too tangled too easily, and wouldn't allow me to do the moves I really enjoyed. I do a lot of thread-the-needle and butterfly-based moves, and those are a pain to do with tails because they get in the way. Tangling up tails is aweful. Socks and cones come untangled very easily - essential for hyperloops and airwraps.
In defense of *fire*... have you spun with fire yet? Tails really can't compare to fire when it comes to mesmorizing... the light, the heat, and the SOUND. Mmmm... Plus you have the ritual involved in dipping, spinning out, safety, etc. etc. and the balance between fear and confidence.

you can't convince me that you didn't get a rush from spinning fire in the beginning, and you probably would not have been attracted to spinning in the first place if all it ever was was ribbons on a piece of string/stick.
i have many different types of poi for all occasions
- tails for in a park on a sunny day
- socks for practising at home
- LED's for parties, clubs etc
- fire
and i play with all of them. i probably play with my socks the most, i practise with them anywhere between 3 & 7 days a week.
for me it's still pretty much about the fire, but i've ony been spinning a year and a half, so i'm still a relative newbie. i LOVE nailing a new move with my socks, but then can't wait to nail it with fire. we only spin fire about once every 3 weeks, as we don't really get together for a burn more often than that. but i like it that way, it keeps it special. i'm sure the novelty would soon wear off if there were a burn in dublin every other nite...

The feeling, the noise, the trails, the effect it has on onlookers, the fact they go out after 4 minutes so you can search for the "perfect burn", waiting all day for night to fall so you can have a proper burn..
I don't burn a lot compared to many people, it seems, but I look on it as an amazing treat when I can find a place and the time to do it
But there's nothing wrong with any other type of spinning, it's just they don't have the feeling of danger that fire does (I know, maybe it's because I set my head on fire first time I burned or something but meh, feels good to me!).

I still like my tailed poi, I've got a set that I've had since I started spinning and they're perfectly balanced and weighted. But a lot of the moves I do are a lot trickier with tails - you can do them but you have to be really spot on. And when they get tangled up they take ages to undo again.
But butterfly hyperloops are actually easier than normal ones with tails
As for fire I don't really spin fire very often - it's nice when it's around but it's not why I spin at all - it's for me and not an audience...

Wow...everything I wanted to say on this thread has already been said. but once you try fire, you'll see what all the fuss is about. I tried flags for the first time a couple of days ago, and I have to get myself a set but there's just something special about working with fire.

yeah, not much more to add here except maybe:
when I started out I liked the trail of light that fire poi leaves on your vision, with that in mind I always thought that tailed poi were daytime version of the fire poi. the same trail but different. so it's definately one of my 2 favourites visually.
right now I have a wide collection of things I poi with: fire poi, fire ropes, tailed poi, sock poi, juggling cones (these are really good to show/learn new moves because you can do them in slow-motion), rock-on-a-string, shopping bags, microphone cables, dirty laundry, clean laundry, anything that will spin really. but when I'm alone practicing or just spinning (is the same thing really) I find myself using either sock poi or my unlit firepoi (I love the way the chain feels in my hand, and also because this way I'll have the feeling of the weight integrated in the moves, just in case I might get the urge to light up).
whenever I go outside to play, I always bring some tailed poi as well, in case people want to play with it, or when they ask me to show something and i want it to look nice. but I am seriously considering making some flagpoi to take with me instead.

If I use them on short string it's fine... and long string when I'm feeling bolder... I love the way they define the space around you. I do much bigger moves than the sockmob tend to and take up loads of space and that's a great feeling. I've tried socks a few times but because I'm not up to doing isolations and all that I run out of anything to have fun with really fast. I could practice more, but it feels like work rather than a release/destress.....Comes down to that difference between the 'technical' 'London' styler and the feral freestyler I guess!

When I'm trying to learn something I usually start with the glowies cause they're shortish, then the tails, then fire. And flags are fun but I can't do so much with them really.
.....Can't juggle balls but I sure as hell can juggle details....

I LOVE fire...the smell, the sound, the adrenaline rush, the colour, the heat...everything about it..sooo nice.
But i like normal poi too

as much as i love fire, it pisses me off when some idiot is usin a practice staff or poi and says they are doing "fire twirling". one of my firends actually went up to a person at her school and commented on their poi and they didn't know what she was talking about! at the moment in my town there are a whole flock of n00bs that only seem to spin cause they see people like us with fire and think its cool, at least when its not fire there is a commitment to improving your skills rather than just getting people to look at you.

Most people I know who are dedicated to spinning spin at least 100:1 hours of non fire:fire or some equally one sided ratio.
the amount I spend spinning my socks around or the fuzzy poi or flags around, practicing moves, combos, and just dancing, is the real joy for me. Sure lighting up and getting some compliments on the pretty fire is always fun, but alot of the time, it's just to grab people into it and get them interested. Hopefully they will see the other side of spinning as well.

ive still never had the chance to spin fire since i started a few years back and although i would like to try, i love spinning with my streamers and i think high intensity glow sticks make a better impact than fire anyways.

My early experience was with fire. My friend let me play within the first week of even seeing poi (now, safety note: she did make sure that I could do the basic moves and made me promise to not do anything other than the stuff that I could do cleanly!). But there is something very atracting with the fire. i dont get to play much, but every now and then have a mad night of it and I look forward to these with anticipation.
I did have a set of aerotechs (hmm, not sure these are as indistructable as I was lead to believe
)and these are a lot of fun and clubbing and dancing it is much better with a few sticks, looks cool. but still, it is a treat to play with the flames

i've breifed most of my friends on teh wonders of poi. the thing that really pisses me off, however, is when they refer to fire poi as "real" poi. i just want to rip thier heads from their shoulders and kick it into a rabit hole, and i inform them of this.
you can't have fake poi, no matter how homemade and makeshift they are.
