Yesterday, I took one of those online personality tests. This one so happened to be based on the Jung - Myers-Briggs typological approach. Anyway, I didn’t think the results accurately described my personality, which got me thinking. Now, I know this test is supposed to be fairly accurate for most, so I was wondering how many of you do not think it quite fits you?

I started discussing the issue with some of my friends, and they agreed that it didn’t seem to fit me. Then, one person in particular started to say that my personality was very complex and that it changed depending on what type of situation I was put in. He started quoting from the book the results are more explicitly presented in (Please Understand Me II by David Keirsey). Now admittedly, he doesn’t know me all that well, and as he proclaimed, he has never been able to read me or figure me out, but he found many different “types” that fit me well depending on the situation.

So, is it normal for someone to react differently to different situations? If so, why do you think some people do that and others react similarly in different situations?

I thought I had a problem with that too, I was doing an art project and it was about my personality so I got people to describe me in a few words and one guy said I acted differently around different people, being paranoid like I am I thought he meant I was quad-faced or something similar but I just do react to different people in different ways. I can't describe myself in each situation but I'm noticeably different, I don't think it's a problem... I think everyone does it to some extent. I've got some notes on it in my Psych work. I'll dig them out and post them up at some point!

I think people tend to react differently to different situations, depending on their comfort level.

I know that there are two circles of friends I tend to spend most of my time with, and I probably behave a bit differently in each circle because of the differences in personalities that I interact with.

I think, for the most part, my overall behavior isn't that different, but certain reactions to jokes or conversations may be a bit different between the two groups because of the different dynamics of the two groups. Make sense?

I took that test, as well, and I think it classified me as an Idealist. I have no idea if that suits me or not...but I don't recall being classified as an idealist before.

I also think your responses to quizes like that tend to vary depending on what's going on in the rest of your life...but I could be wrong....psychology stuff isn't my forte, at all.

I took the test and resulted in my type being ENTJ - Extroverted (33%) Intuitive (44%) thinking (1%) and Judging (11%). Which means that I'm moderately expressed extrovert, moderately expressed intuitive personality, slightly expressed thinking personality, slightly expressed judging personality.

Now I was almost inclined to agree but I would have put my thinking much higher up, I don't stop thinking hardly ever! I think I'm a bit extrovert at the right times, definately intuitive, I always try not to judge without the facts and as I said my brain is always active on the inside wether I'm expressing it or not!! But maybe it's just that I don't know the real me?? These things always get be confused....does my perception of myself meet the perception of myself from others? Are any of us actually right in our perceptions??

Let's relight this forum ubblove

A few years ago I did the full (proper wink) Myers-Briggs test with an instructor as a 2 day workshop. This test, in-conjunction with an instructor, is vastly superior to the on-line gimmicky tests. As a result of doing the test I learnt much about my personality. Its true I didn't fit exactly into some categories, but as a sceptic was impressed by what I learnt, and considered the test to be a worthwhile. In many respects it changed the way I approached things because I understood more about why and how I did things.

Its really amazing how complex everyone is, even those who seem so simple have so much more going on then you would quess, its natural to react different around different people and in different situations, everyone does it, evn if they deny it, i have a textbook on personality and there are some test in there, i dont know, it could be that the results are your true self, and you just dont see that in yourself, but its more likely the test just isent reflecting you, dont stress over it, humans are too complex to catogorize>>>peace

i definately act differently depending on who im with. some people think im a snob because im so shy and quiet, but when i get with my friends i can be so loud. however at the same time when im uncomfortable i can also get loud...it really depends. however to completely screw over all that i have said, i opened up to someone i had only known for 2 days! which is an amazing thing (my friends would testify to this) for me!

i would have changed ***** to phallus, and claire to petey Petey

My Keirsey/MBTI personality type describes me very well. I think this personality system is accurate because it classifies types according to the underlying process through which they function. The method to one's madness. Heh.

If you're interested in reading a (very) long description of your type, this site is good: https://www.geocities.com/lifexplore/

Re: having different personalities in different situtations. I think everyone does/has that. But people have a core personality which is most true to themself and which they would express if not for the sake of fitting in, avoid alienating others, etc.

I don't think I articulated that very well. tongue

Ahh I don't like personality tests, being put into groups and stereotyped in that way you really don't want to be. Ick. *Refuses to do the test*
Anyhoo, I found that stuff about different situations and reacting in different ways it's called get this: "Behavioural Specificity, that is their behaviour is specific to certain situations" - studies were done by Mischel to prove his/her theory. Bandura looked at it aswell but I haven't actually got very much information.
NOTE: the imformation I have is from an A-Level Psychology book, and they are only theories!
