I've just read somewhere that people who are left handed have, on average, a life expectancy 9 years less than right handed people and I want to know why.

I've heard one theory that says because pretty much all manufacturing equipment is made for right handed people, left handed people are more at risk because they're using their weaker and less co-ordinated hand to control it.
Surely this can't amount to a substantial difference in life expectancy, anyone heard any other theories or is it all just a load of rubbish?

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I've heard that theory before, and I've heard that explanation for the theory as well. I don't quite buy it either.

Maybe lefties are just such happy, fun-loving people that they don't need the extra nine years?

I don't want to die early. I want to annoy as many people as i can by being old, decrepid, smelly, old, smelly and repeat everything i say at least three times. I wouldn't mind missing out on the incontinence thing though.

Yea! And we are out there living life so much - all the time - until there is nothing left to live!!! So we finish up 9 years early, happy and content. And we don't have to have someone clean up after us!!!!

speaking as a professional left handed person, we use up all our energy being creative and using the other half of our brains that there's nothing left to run the last little bit of life. It's the crappy bit at the end anyway so I don't really mind to much although being old and cranky does have a certain appeal.

what is 'manufacturing equipment'? seriously, how many of us are exposed to heavy machinery on a daily basis? ive worked on industrial sites, and ive never encountered an object that couldnt be safely used by left and right handed people alike.... except for that bloody annoying right handed screwdriver that i cant work out......

Hm.. I really should check this before posting but I'm on a slow connection and can't be bothered.. I do remember hearing premature babies are considerably more likely to be left handed- and are obviously at a higher risk of premature death- which would surely skew the stats.

I also read that different surveys have shown no link to early death from left handedness. shrug

I contact juggle better with my left hand, should that take a few months off?

If left-handedness have a lower life expectancy, are jugglers basically suicidal?
