KEVLAR® Thread

By Malcolm Crawshay, Home of Poi
The KEVLAR® thread we sell has a breaking strain of 12.5Kg. It is ideal for stitching KEVLAR® wick onto Fire Props. If you keep the stitches deep within the wick and pulled tight it will last for years.

However if you let the fire wicks smoulder by allowing all the fuel to be used up then the KEVLAR® wick will burn away slowly and fall apart and eventually do the same to the thread. Sunlight also degrades and darkens the color of KEVLAR® wick slowly over time. So it is good to have wick covers when using Fire Props during daylight, it also stops you getting your daytime clothes dirty from the residues on the wicks.

A lot of people fasten wick onto their props with screws and to stop themselves from getting branded by a hot screw head they stitch a flap of KEVLAR® tape over the screw heads.

Because of how expensive KEVLAR® is compared to other threads we sell on small spools (which is the most popular size). If you want only a small amount we also sell per meter or per ft (units depend on the language settings) and if you are a big time manufacturer we have the large spools also available.

Cutting KEVLAR®

KEVLAR® has a very high cut resistance. Which means it will blunt even the most expensive scissors very fast. At HoP we use box cutters or craft knives which have replaceable blades. Do not ever use your mum's favorite dress fabric scissors or you will be in big trouble!

"Bought 2 sewing needles, the hole is abit small so i'm having a hard time threading the needle because the wick thread opens up into several pieces, but the size of the needle is great."

The only needle needed for sewing my fan heads together.
"The strength, shape and durability of this needle is just what one needs to easily and properly sew kevlar thread, specifically for my fan wicks. I usually wear tight fitting gloves( like baseball gloves) and a thimble since pulling the thread through hurtd my bare hands, and pushing the needle through the tough kevlar material can become painful( esp with my soft massage therapist hands lol) with out the thimble. This is my 4th needle Ive purchased (since I keep losing them and pretty cheap). I havent found a product that compares to effectiveness and dexterity of this needle. qill buy again for sure!"

Perfect for tools and costumes
"I love kevlar thread because apart from sewing wicks together I can also use it in my costuming, in the parts where fire comes too close for a long time. This way I am confident that pieces of my costume won't fall off because the thread burnt through. And all the wicks I've sown with this thread so far have been holding on well and assisting in great performances."
