So here I am again. It's been a while hasn't it. My alto sax initially got a lot of use. Funny isn't it, how a fulltime job takes away all your spare time. Haven't had any time to poi too, apart from Jugglejam on Mondays and the monthly Moonfests. And even then, it somehow seems I tend to play with the stockwhip instead of poi shrug

Another lens has been added to the stable too. A Canon EF-S 10-22 3.5-4.5.. nice and wiide. But it all boils back down to that time issue. Despite having the new lens, I seem to find I'm out taking less pictures.. the folio hasn't been updated in a while, and I'm starting to get the horrible feeling I'm stagnating. Must. Get out of this rut.

If you're my muse and reading this, inspiration needed now. hug

-Edited 14 Dec 2005-

I liken this to opening the fridge to find that jar of misc what's it, several months expired ubblol. Hey how's it going? wave

So what's new! Well.. poi's getting a bit better for one thing. Nice how after poi-ing for a while, you stop hitting yourself senseless. In fact, one might argue how after a certain point, each hit puts more sense into you.. wink Haven't gone skating or rockclimbing in a bit, but that's ok- life's full of wonderful distractions, and really, you can only do a couple at a time.

University's just wrapped up! Yep. A degree in art & visual culture, television & digital media.. Just waiting for a piece of paper at the moment (yay!). And trying to sort out how Australia will let me live here forever and ever biggrin. Have I mentioned how wonderful it is, you so ought to visit *nudge* wink Also been getting out the with photography and stuff- a couple of projects to follow up on, blue skies and puffy clouds as far as I can see.

Updates updates. [insert geek] I've updated my camera gear too.. my 20D, 17-85 4-5.6 IS and 580EX now have a 70-200 2.8L IS to play with.. soon too, riding on getting a particular gig, either a 350D and a 24-105 f4 IS, or another 20D.. -grin- [/end geek]

[edit 14/12/05: Gig didn't go through, and ended up performing at it instead of shooting it ubblol Life has a funny way of messing you about doesn't it.. so no 2nd body for me just yet, or nice 24-105 f4 IS redface]

Been taking lots of photos lately. I think there's something intrinsically beautiful in capturing moments- you know how you look at a photo and it brings you back to where you were that day, who you were with, how the air smelt even.. Maybe one day I'll get to exhibit ubblove.. but yeah.. lots of work to be done meantime.

Hmmmm.. yes the world's beautiful today. It's good to have new toys, new moves, new direction.. old friends hug.. a best friend hug2, and enough distractions not to get bored for too long.

Btw.. favourite words haven't changed.. ubbrollsmile And mm.. I'm still not too close to balletic, and dulcet..

Hmm.. la la la laaa squawk.. footinmouth

[edit 14/12/05: I now have a beautiful alto saxophone- the best use of which I have thus far found, is to attract ducks and other misc waterfowl]

Yep, how about we say still aspiring. biggrin

Hope all's well with everyone- don't be strangers now! hug biggrin

I've been exploring this site a bit lately, and have decided everyone seems like a nice bunch- thought it's about time I said hello. Ryan, 24, born in Singapore, but Brisbane Australia has been home to me for the past 3 years.

I love photography, playing the guitar (if one took a picture of me with my guitar, it looks like I'm playing it- does that count?), getting from point A to B on my trusty mountain bike, inline skating and hockey, occasionally rockclimbing, and just being in good company. I'd also like to add poiing to the list when I stop hitting myself senseless.

Irrelevantly, my two favourite words (I've got heaps if anyone's interested) are 'balletic' and 'dulcet'. 'Balletic', unfortunately, isn't a word I'd use to describe anything I can do, and 'dulcet' is a word I haven't dreamt of aspiring towards yet.

Enough for now, don't be strangers! biggrin

Ry I flew to Ireland last year and will be doing it again (probably) this year for the EJC. It's was a 40-ish minute flight and it took all my will power and concentration to not freak out. I'm not sure I can sustain that for 24 hours to get to Oz.

As for the swimming idea Mig... well I guess I could give it a go. Is the cage really there, so if I get tired I can stand up to catch my breath, or is it to stop all the sea creatures protesting that you've let loose a freaky woman in their habitat. I seriously doubt any sea creature has bad enough taste to want to eat me, unless they were very very hungry ubblol Anyway, it has to be an open top cage.... or the same problem as being in a plane will happen. I'm scared of being locked inside things/places.

We could do with a bit of sunshine here today. It's a bit grizzly grey again. I think we are in for a bit of rain. Rain's good though, without it Wales wouldn't be the green and gorgeous place it is.

As a Physics student couldn't Linden just invent a "beam me up/down Scottie" machine? That would save me from annoying all the jelly fish.

dude -

what cam / lens/ flash have you got

run me a list of your photography gear will you...

im starting to make a list of all teh stuff i am going to buy in teh next year, leading up to a new camera after xmas next year (yes this is a long time to wait, but im waiting for some price drops again, and to see if canon will bring anything new out)

i am thinking

580x flash
remote trigger (will need to research this a littel more)
battery grip (or spare couple of batts (batts will prob be cheeper))
COMPUTREKKER AW (BLACK)back pack

and then a series of Image stabilised leneses, was thinking maybe an 17-85 or a 24-135

but the choice of lens is more down to the model of camera i buy

as i am stuck between a 5d and a 20d, he 20 is more cheepers, but it has a 1.6x mag on all lens focal length, which is really annoying, but teh 5d does not have a flash built in they both have ups and down, so thats why im waiting to see how it pans out..

a 5d would push my photography more, less auto modes to use, but i will have to have a good look....

Sam: Heya.. don't worry about it.. me's been a bit missing too ubblol Can't say I've ever been to a recording of a radio show before. Actually, for that matter I don't think I've even been a live audience for a tv show either.. hmm. Hmm.. do you know if shows like Coupling were done for a live audience or is that just a laugh track? Sleep. ubblol What is sleep? Haven't been getting much of that lately I don't think.. So many things to do... ubbangel Hope all's well with ya! hug

gita: Hey geets! biggrin Sorry about that.. haven't been following my email as closely as I should. I just sent out a reply with lots of info. Probably the 26th.. But you could possibly start moving in smaller things sooner if you need to? Just let me know and we can arrange it. Quite looking forward to it! It's like, 5 days away! Seeya soon housemate! biggrin hug

Chicken: Hey! That's a puff plan! cool Looking forward to it. Lou and I'll be there.. hmm costume... will have to think a bit.. mmm *ponder* ubbangel

mech: A 5D!? That's a nice jump. Though, it completely will double your expenses. See, with a 20D, you could go the EFS17-85, and maybe an EF70-200, and maybe the EFS10-22.

But, if you go the 5D, and you want to stick to Canon lenses, you'd prolly have to get the EF24-105 to match the versatility of a 20D with the EFS17 85. Hence more than doubling your outlay.

The 580EX, imho, is a must have. The 430EX doesnt cut it because it's not powerful enough to get you the freedom to use a tele lens for night time fire photography.. Not that it can't get the shots- just that a bigger guide number will help.

Accessory wise, there's the TC 80N3 which I want to get eventually. It's got an interval timer too.. practically means you could go spinning and get shots of yourself if you wanted wink

My gear currently..

20D body, BGE2 battery grip, 2 BP511a batteries, a BP514, handstrap E1, a Pentax neckstrap from my film camera (cos it looks a humbler than the gaudy Canon strap..) wink an EFS 17-85 with EW83B hood, an EF70-200 2.8L IS, Manfrotto 680B monopod, Manfrotto 322RC2 pistol grip ballhead, Velbon Mountain Chaser tripod legs, 580EX speedlite, 16 Inca 2500mah AA batteries for the flash, and a Canon 7.1mp ixus 700 point and shoot for the movies and random snaps. Couple of UV filters too, a Hoya for the 77mm and a B+W for the 67mm.

Upgrade path, prolly looking to the 1DmkIIn and an EF24-105f4L.. The 5D is full frame, but you know.. need the glass for it. Else the lens imperfections are more likely to turn up on the edges.. like light falloff/vignetting or softness etc. Plus the 1 series has weathersealing, multiple card slots, and faster burst rate. But mm.. all a dream at the moment.. wink Hope yours comes true sooner than mine, or you'll be waiting a really long time.. ubblol biggrin beerchug PS. Auto modes? What on earth are auto modes!? spank

i was thinkings a 5d more due to they are only around 500 notes more, but i belive tehy are a eter camera, more proffesional, and that would mean i am only on down from th top in teh range, and not third down

i would like t push my self more and more, so i have to relearn how to use a cam, get awa from auto modes, and more into proffesional style shooting.....

any lens i am goingto buy will be image stabilise for night and low light shooting, and i have not seen a sigma lensor any non canon lens that has an IS system in it, unless you know of one....

i see what you are saying, but i would like not to have to mltiply any lenses i buy by 1.6which i would have to do with the 20d, and my current camera, meaningtaht what ever lenses i buy would be more effective as i would not have to change them over to get shorter ranges, and a lens should be used at it right levels to make sure you are getting the shot you wnat

im not looking for a new body till maybe january, so ican wait for prices to coem down a little more, and to see if canon brings out any new models like a 5ds or something.....

i really wnat a ne body, but i am going to take time over thenext year and buy lots of new gear, i bought a crumpler photo/camera bag yesterday, its huge, so it have lots of space for my evolving kit bag

i bought a cheep flash to last week, and that works well with my cam, and started tod o some studio work, ill show you later if you like...

mech: Well, I suppose if you can swing it, a 5D would be awesome, and I would be most jealous. Drawback though, slower burstrate, and 500 notes can help you get another piece of L glass wink.

Yup, Sigma's playing around with image stabilisation too.. they've got the APO 80-400 4.5-5.6 EX OS, which is a cheaper alternative to the Canon 100-400 4.5-5.6L IS.

On a bit of a tangent, but for non Canon mount, Nikon users have their VR system too. And for a while Konica Minolta had something good with their image stabilisation on the body instead of the lens, which practically made all your lenses image stabilised. Then they pulled out of the DSLR market.

Speculation-wise.. you'll hear heaps of people telling you about a 20D successor sometime in the next couple months, but then again, it's probably better to wait and see rather than speculate.

Auto modes.. eek Auto modes don't set your camera up for the shot.. they mess you up for the shot more like! spank tsk. I've not used any of the dummy modes on the 20D since I got it.. Mostly Av for daily things, manual or Tv for fire photography.

Eitherway, sounds like you're in for some exciting enablements. I don't think my next one will be for a long while yet. So what kind of flash did you end up getting?

flash - i bought a bounce and swivel, advanced flash, it has a motorised flash head, so it draws the flash back, or forwards to compensate for distance in shots smile

it was only 30 notes, and although it is not a digital flash, only a ttl, it still works well, and teaches me some flash basics, until i can get a 580ex, no point in messing in anything smaller

i just updated the firmware on my 300d to make it a 10d camera, so that should help a little, and now i am trying to work out how to get it to perform a rear curtain sync flash....

im still in the mid ground between the 5 and the 20, i know the 20 is less expensive, by some way, but again there is no multiplication on the 5d, as its a full sensor chip, and a higher grade chip to i believe....

im not sure yet, and its more like a year away that i will be buying a new one in teh next jan sales to get the best deal i can, and i am fully expecting a new digital slr from canon in the next year, and if not, the price of the bodies will deffinatly come down....

whats the point in buying non IS lenses?

surly having IS always on your lenses is a bonus, or am i missing something?

i understand there is no need for it on some lenses like the tilt and shift ones, but i am stuck as to why people would but a non IS lens, esp on a zoom lens!!!!!!

i think i might buy a couple of lenses this year, maybe starting at a 17-85 (24-135) i belive, but i am goin to try to be care full so that i am not missing gaps in my lenes scope when i buy the next body, as it will not have a maginification factor like the 20d, and i think thats whats messing me up the most atm, so i will have to have a play and see what i can see

go to jessops.co.uk and into the digital slr section and you can compare all the coanon srl bodies to see whats what....

as for the frame burst moes, its not to terrible, 3fps

and the max burst rate is large though, so it would be ok, as no matter what size your fps mode is, it will still have to write the data to your card!

and that can take an age if teh shots are lare and lots, so you can lose out by sometimes having more shots......

thestart up time is not a massive differnec but its nice to have a faster one smile
