I was waching the CoL video the other day at my friends house and saw the there is a part when a guy dips his poi on the floor a couple of times, the floor catches fire, then he jumps on the flames and the whole floor ignites. I realise that he poured fuel on the floor but how did he get the flame to stay at first and then only when he jumped did it ignite? It was frigging cool.Flame on.------------------Give Me FuelGive Me FireGive Me That Which I Desire-MetallicA

Not watched that video for a while but was it not a girl that did it? I might be wrong my memory is a little hazy. I think it was one of Hayobola though. Where is Dangerboy when you want him? I don't think it was the action of jumping, however, that caused overall ignition. More the movement of the poi overhead that fanned the flames.....Just a thought.By the way, the grown ups are going to come and tell how dangerous it is to do it. Don't say I didn't warn you....

And twirlnig Fire isn't dangerous Cantus? That's what makes it fun I guess! The thrill of it going around you... or on you but that's a different story.Never seen CoL, or CoL 2.

I'm not a grown up so I can't say K. But, I would have to say that standing in a pool of burning fuel is fairly dangerous. Whether it's more or less dangerous than spinning i wouldn't like to say.Anyway that wasn't my point. My point was that someone would come and say how dangerous the floor fire thing is.

It was one of the girls from Hayobola, yes. This can be done by igniting fuel that is already there or.....and this is what it looked like to me....she hadn't spun off yet so when she hit her poi on the ground it left little flaming puddles. Then when she ran through the two aisles of flames (not jumped) and she spun, it flamed them and caused them to spread, but also added a bit more fly off fuel to the fire. This technique is used by Cirque du Soliel as well. It is really cool on blacktop. Ask Peregrine and Nomad what happens when you try it on a dirt road, if you want to know the danger aspect! However, as long as the floor/ground is black top, cement...something non-burnable (such as a cement warehouse floor in the vid)...and you do it away from structures that will ignite, it is pretty safe. Just keep a fire extinguisher on hand, and make sure that the slope of the ground won't cause a flaming stream (though that is cool in imagery). Common sense is all. Or maybe I am not one of the grown ups! grin I am interested to hear from Dangerboy if she did it a different way however.M'best to all------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...https://www.pyromorph.com[This message has been edited by Pele (edited 08 January 2002).]

It's not clear on the COL video as to whether the pois needed to be dipped along the ground for the trick to work tho, cos the ground looked slick already.I spose you guys know that it's the vapours from the twirling fuel that ignites right? Direct contact between flamin' poi and fuel slick does not need to occur when you consider that a naked flame/lit fart nearby is all that is needed for the floor to ignite.I hate twirling with low flash point fuels, but Shellite looks _MAD_ to leap over, fart or no. shocked------------------In Australia, It is said that "Twirler with hand in pocket feel cocky all day." =P

i'm telling ellen that you thought she was a boy, and are you gonna get it! anways, the trick is a really simple one. first of all, you have to use fuel with a low flash point. our fuel of choice was camping fuel/naphtha/ white gas/etc etc. basically you super soak your poi, light them, then just thump them on the ground, leaving blobs of fire behind. make a line of these, stand back, and run through spinning. as pele noted, the spray from the poi leaves two runways of fuel that are lit by the blobs of fire on the ground. ellen called it the "back to the future". there are few other things i've done with this that work well. one is supersoaking and doing a butterfly in front of you with the planes of rotation at right angles. makes an x of fire on the ground, which can then be danced over and around. the last one i've only done once and by mistake and it scared the shot out of me. i was by myself, had just lit up, and was spinning little circles by my legs. everything was fine for a few seconds until the fuel that had unknowingly been spraying onto my pants lit up. next thing i knew, my lower legs were seriously on fire. luckily, because is was camp fuel, it burned out quicky and hadn;t soaked my pants badly. after it had put itself out, i thought how freakin' cool it looked. might be a good trick for a PROFESSIONAL (underline bold underline) in leather pants.play safe, kids.db------------------Earth my body, water my blood, air my breath, fire my spirit

i tried to do that with citronella oil last night. didnt work.a friend said you can do it by not shaking off the poi, then to start, spin in a circle with the poi dragging on the ground, and you get a ring of flames.well, all i got was citronella marks on the floor.anyone know why it didnt work? i wanna try it.

Hey there miss clare, I can tell you why...the flash point (i.e. the temperature at which the fuel need to be to ignite) of Citronella oil is too high, these guys are talking about using things like white spirits, which light much more easily and will burn in a pool on the ground, where as kero, citronella oil, lamp oil will not...I should have wandered over last night and you could have asked me then....I was a bit preoccupied with that lovely swiss girl though....------------------fe fi foo fun

:feeling very juvenile tonight:I was right!...she's a girl! grinI was right!...how she did it!Aha I was right! I am just damn good! tongueAnd yes DB, what you found is a spatter form of trailing. Good only with leather from things like poi or in small amounts from torches on bare flesh (preferrably arms) done carefully!Ohohoohohohoh!!!!! What if you make the run way...run through it (reminded me of when drag cars shoot fire from the pipes and leave the burn behind...but I see the BTTF reference now that you mention it) and right before it goes out do a roll through it....or some other form of tumbling? The spray can also be done in a circle so you are in a firey circle for all of 30 secs. You can also go from sides to one forward, one behind and it becomes very boxy.I like the X idea, very nice. Kind of reminds me of the sword dance for Irish Step dancing, where you dance over the two crossed swords. Hmmmmm.....idea forming.....I *****really***** want to find a way to do this stuff on a treated wood stage (since that is what most ren stages are), since the fuel burns out so quickly...does anyone know if it then truly is a threat to the stage? Hmmmm...looks like I have to head back to the lab.Does this mean you are handing in your pro status DB? frown Hope you had a great and full recovery. wait am i supposed to say what happens when you try this on gravel?so, we try this on gravel relatively frequently since the place we spin has a gravel path and sometimes you just have to get rid of that stupid 2mm of coleman fuel left in the can by drawing a picture on the ground and lighting it. however, once done, you CANNOT put it out until it burns out on its own, unless you use a fire extinguisher. you might think kicking sand over the fuel would smother it, which we tried, however all this does is spread the fire around onto your feet. the fuel gets into the gravel and the rocks heat up and cause the coleman to vaporize and spread more rapidly. if you try scuffing it you will get little fireballs.smothering it with a towel wont work well either since once the gravel gets hot, the fuel vapor will basically instantly relight from any spark left. and whatever you do. DONT POUR WATER ON A FUEL FIRE!! we tried this too smile and it makes the fuel spread out even more. which actually looks kind of cool, and you get that neat snaky blue coleman flame effect, but not a very controlled situation. and you get steam too, not very cool. this is why fire extinguishers are necessary for fuel fires. or be prepared to let whatever amount of fuel you used completely burn itself out.so thats our fun experience with fire on gravel smile pere
