Hi there.... I am very interested in learning how to twirl (excuse the lack of knowledge on my part.... I am not even sure if saying "Twirl" is the right thing to say... But I need some advise and direction on how to begin.

I saw a fire twirler this weekend for the first time and it was AMAZING...and I have been dying to learn about it ever since.

What should I buy as a BEGINNER. smile

Thanks.

Be as happy as me....

What is the difference between Staff and Poi??

Well, I saw a girl twirling FIRE...and it was amazing... I know I need to start somewhere on a safer level considering I have never tried this before.... but that is what I eventually would love to be able to do.

no, a staff is a staff. as by definition:

n. pl. staffs or staves (stvz)

1. A stick or cane carried as an aid in walking or climbing.

2. A stout stick used as a weapon; a cudgel.

3. A pole on which a flag is displayed; a flagstaff.

4. A rod or baton carried as a symbol of authority.

i prefer the second and fourth definition.

it looks like this on this link here

poi look like this on this link here

understand? ubbrollsmile

Which the doughty-hearted beginner uses to whack self repeatedly, accompanied by the fearsome cry "OW, MY FACE!"

Or is that just me?

There is a slight possibility that I am not actually right all of the time.

to clarify silver.
Long, knee length socks. Preferable is bright girly attention grabbing colours with some kind of weight in the end of each. Tennis balls work. Juggling balls are better (more weight less sore) and rice, sand, mullet (dunno what that is ask Dom) in a bag also works.

Clothing is optional. wink

Yes - get yourself some sock poi - and then look at the "free lessons" provided on HoP. And, remember, practice practice practice. You will not figure everything out on the first try (or you might - but then I'd have to hate you) just keep practicing, and you'll get it. Try to remember to learn everything S-LO-W-L-Y. And if you are near others, meet-ups are a great way to (a) make some new friends and (b) learn some new tricks.

Happy Twirling.

okay, misshappypants, they are not helping you much are they? for starters make practice poi, preferably as soft as possible, my favorite practice poi are ones i made for news paper bags stuffed with newspaper, sometimes with washers in the middle for extra weight, there soft and they're recycling too, entire poi should be about the lengtht of your arm, you can use any kind of string that dosent tangle up on itself after being swung in one directrion for a whille,

after you get pretty good with those, id suggest the tailed poi you can buy on this website for further practice, then fire, but dont start worrying about that yet,

as for lessons, if you dont know anyone who can teach you first hand, then the free lessons on this website are preety good, the art of poi dvd is preety good for basics, but it only teaches you so much, good luck, if you need more help you can PM me>>>much luv

staff is sooooooooooooooooo much better than poi...

in my opinion anyways....

Anyway, sock poi is good to start off with. Then move up to tennis balls with strings and then to streamer poi.

Any1 want to correct me if this wrong info, pls feel free. Giving ouy wrong info sucks...

You're wrong tongue wink

There's no need to move from socks -> tennis balls -> tails...

Once you've got good (ish) with socks, you can use anything; tails, fire-poi (unlit), flags, kittens's on the end of a shoelace, UCOF on the end of a chain

Tails are good - they teach pretty almost immaculate timing (otherwise they tangle) and look nice during the day, but are a bitch to tangle sometimes, and are tricky to use in any wind.
