Hi and warm welcome Kyle! wave

You sound like you'd know.. Majoring in environmental science and chemistry, what's the best way to make a non-smelly, environmentally reasonably friendly, purple or blue burning fuel? devil

heh, well, youre not gonna be happy, but generally, colored flames are a pain in the ass to get, especially when trying to mix your own...

since you asked youre gonna get the whole explanation...

1. Im betting youre using a petroleum based fuel (kero, camp fuel, etc.) which means the substances that give you color (usually some sort of salt) will not dissolve readily in your fuel.
You have to use something like ethanol if you want your flame color salts to dissolve, and alcohol based fuels usually give kinda wimpy flames

2. Purple may be one of the hardest colors to get in terms of rare and expensive chemicals (off the top of my head indium or strontium would do it, both of which you cant find in your average Walgreens)

theres a nifty rxn you can do with table sugar and potassium chlorate to give a gorgeous purple flame, but its kinda volent (more of an explosion than a burning)

but dont take my word for it smile

I may be wrong and there may be a nice easy way

Hey Kyle. How goes stuff?
What's the weather like in Connecticut at the moment? It's freezing here. And yet we still go out and have fire meets... tis a bloody stoopid hobby sometimes...

Meh

Hey Wiffle, how's life and all that stuff. Just wanted to add my two cents about the flames. Most pottery retailers, like bulk suppliers will have some of the chemicals for the fuels. Now... don't ask me exaclty where you can find one of them, but you know, it's out there. Sorry about turning this into a Chem thread. Anyway, welcome to HoP ^_^

Don't mind me, just passing through.
