Not sure I've ever introduced myself. I'm... Nick. Sometimes known as Meenik, or the guy who put up that video, Dervisly Yers.

I've spent most of my life engaged in some kind of creative project, off on a spiritual pilgrimage, or working any number of grunt-jobs to fund it all. I've got some gifts but also some manifest weaknesses, including the tendency to get depressed when the latter seems to outweigh the former by too much. My past projects have included writing and publishing a book, doing lots of performance related activities, freelancing for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, lots of other writing projects, and taking classes in various forms of dance and martial arts... although never as consistently as I would like. You could get the details on any of this by visiting my personal web site, thevenue.org.

I got into poi almost six years ago, after seeing it at a party and having an intense vision of what it can be as a movment/energy training tool. The first few years I practiced non-stop, and eventually put some videos on my poi website, which became very popular. So popular that I came back from a trip to Asia owing everybody money, only to discover a $1000 bill from my web hosting company. Instead of getting a full time dead-end grunt job and working for two years to pay off all my debts, I started a crazy ride of sometimes working temp-grunt jobs and sometimes going on all kinds of poi teaching tours, or hosting poi retreats, or doing other things related to poi. It was quite an adventure, I haven't had much sleep for 2.5 years, and I kept putting myself deeply back into debt smile

...but in the end it's all been good. I'm now in Thailand, and I have a little money coming from The Scales of Poi, so I can hopefully focus on practing again, which is really what makes me the happiest. Well, practice, friends, and cool art projects. There is even a chance I'll be broke by spring, which would be really good.

I also hope to make more videos. I have a vision of how I can contribute to the art form and the community, but it's not always easy to know what to do. Many people say I'm this poi icon, but still it seems so hard to get people to even make links to my website.

Were things to go really well I'll make a series of DVDs, and a series of artistic videos for the internet, which will feature other amazing spinners, not just me. If the DVDs sell really well I'll invest in a boat in three years, so I can take all my favorite artists around the world so we can set up "Play Camps" and put on shows.

But for now, Thailand. I've been telling people all summer to join me here, and many people I met in Europe had already been planning on coming to Asia this winter, so it looks like things are working out great.

So, Hi.
