I dunno about you, but I've noticed there are some words that have been forever erased from the Matrix.

There was a word meaning arrow-slits, like you see in Castles. It was in a book when I was 5 and we used it to describe the pointless narrow windows in the new building at college. But it's gone. Many people can remember that there was a word, and it's always on the tip of their tongue, but no-one can remember it.

The other word meant 'Exploratory Surgery'. People would say, they don't know what's wrong with me so I'm going in for an XXXXXXX. But again, not even the finest minds of the medical profession can remember this word.

It's strange, SOMEONE has removed these words from the collective vocabulary. I view this as proof of the non-existence of God.

Magnus... pay it forward

Maybe they stopped making white dog food?

Bill Oddie's still around though. He's doing a program about birdwatching.

White dog poo...or petrified dog poo is rare because people pick up the poo instead of letting it sit around and get all ick like that.

And the term is Embrasures
: A hole in a thick wall for a door or window with the sides angled so that the inside is larger than the outside. A slanted hole made for a gun or projectile weapon in a wall or parapet.

Technically Embrasures weren't used on a Merlon, because the merlons were used on the battlement as the hiding position. It would take two men behind a merlon actually to cover the sides, back to back behind it, each firing downward. These were created in towers specifically for the use of Long Bows, and to hide from Crossbow Quarrels, which were, during the Feudal era, concidered the most dastardly of hand-held weapon, to the point where they were outlawed for a period. The doors were created this way with two entrances, and arrow slits (different from Embrasures as arrow slits go horizontally) were put in the inside door.

(That's what years of playing D&D and working at Ren Faires will do for you! )

Now, where is Mike Ginny..er...Lightning (can't get used to that) for that pesky med term question!?

Thank you as always pele.

The information in my post came from a 'History of British castles' website. They should have consulted you before uploading such drivel eh?

Embrasure instead of Embrasures. Just goes to show you, never trust what you read on the internet.

These days, exploratory surgery is usually done by laparoscopy. Is that the word you needed? There are two types of exploratory surgery: laparoscopy (which is done with a laparoscope, a fiber-optic probe thingie) and dissection, which is open surgery.

Jim, Ren-Dark Ages-Medieval history are a love of mine, and I really enjoy the castle infrastructure. An Embrasure is the singular form of it, so you were completely correct. I was typing mine when you put yours up...just an overlap in timing!
