i just got the goods to do sparkly poi, but my friend is claiming that steel wool doesnt light under a normal flame, is he right??

Soak it and it shall light...it's the fuel that lights first...then the steel wool bits heat up from the flame. Just be careful as the steel wool bits fly off in a flamey way and can hurt.Best and luck ------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...

Same you use to light up anything. Oil based (Kero and Lamp Oil) have the thick fuel stay on it longer.The whitegas/camp stove fuel is hotter and faster lighting.I use a mix of both. oh yea, I've seen ultra-fine grade steel wool used which will burn without fuel.. even easier smile

The ultra fine stuff can be lit with a couple batteries and some aluminium foil! Good for camping if you don't have matches or if it is wet.
