Posted: Hi people,I’m an arts undergraduate, doing a thing called Performance Writing, (don’t ask) and I’ve decided to use the stick in my next project. What I hoped from you beautiful people on HoP was that you could read my proposal and add any comments, as you can see its pretty big and you really really don’t have too. I’m afraid also that its written in this longwinded academic form (you know they would have me make it longer?) but the ideas are clear enough (I hope).I’m trying this because I want the work to have input from the people who helped me make it, and to give others ideas for performance. This online gift economy thing rocks!Anyway, here it is*****Stick is more commonly known as firestaff twirling, but I prefer the name stick as It has a simpler resonance. A good example of stick can be found here https://www.homeofpoi.com/preview2.wmv . It has become an obsession of mine recently and I want to integrate it into my performance/writing practice.Stick is an amazing operation, one that can be found in any pursuit of perfect integration of body and mind. Dancing, playing pool, throwing a Frisbee can induce a state of conscious like no other, a meditation based on the total absorption of the consciousness into directing the body. It is interesting to note that this state becomes more important and apparent after the physical operation can be accomplished easily, and in fact the perfect action is only achieved when in this ‘no-mind’ type state.A similar state is possible without physical tasks but the action can act as a deliberate trigger, a forcing of the required preparation to achieve the meditation. Please see, Zen and the Art of Archery. (Zen can be summed up as the rigorous systematic teaching of enlightenment)Of course, I want to be using stick in a Performance Writing environment, and I suppose my aim should be to communicate some of what I feel about the stick (this is all very dodgy ground of course) Well, anyway, there is a lot of specialised language built up around staff, that is being actively created by its proponents via the web, please see https://www.homeofpoi.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000006.htmlWith this language I intend to try a synaesthesia of words, image and body. By creating a poem in all three vectors at once, a spoken rhythm of words that directly corresponds to the actions displayed (for this is a performance art, after all). This poem will kneed a lot of revising, as I must keep in mind all aspects and find the most harmonious fit (why harmonious? Because circles are harmonious, balanced). The ideas for presentation are still uncertain, and I would like some feedback from the group. I was thinking about large scale projection verses live performance of perhaps some combination of the two. I’m not sure I want to install stick, I think it might be better to create an atmosphere more related to the kinda spiritual aspect I’m talking about, or do I want to do it atop a car with a banging custom track blaring from the windows? Maybe this is more festival than poetry. I also intend to engage with the community on the web with this project, post this proposal on https://www.homeofpoi.com and ask for feedback and advise with the project. I have been doing some writing around this already, and am already working on a Zen type ‘doctrine of stick’, if I want to include this documentation or not, and if so how, is something that I also kneed to consider and would appreciate input about.I’m not at all certain that these two forms will combine easily or happily, but I’m willing to experiment. I see too oppositional forces that kneed to be resolved, the energy of the performance as ‘spectacle’, as outward aesthetic verses the internal nature of language, and absorbing poetry. Do many poets (apart from ‘funny’ ones (Billy Connelly the big (man) exception)) appear in huge bright costumes? Could you hear the words over the suit shouting? This is defiantly a problem, and one that kneads a binding overall aesthetic. Still not sure. But I think the rewards are to be had, this is a captivating art form and has a great potential to be more expressive and less impressive, because it looks good from the outside, but that’s nothing compared to my perspective. Thanks for ploughing through this. JAny thoughts about the proposal or how stick makes you feel would be most welcome. I know it sounds like a lot of art school tripe, and it is, but humour me Love Nix?tomsscool@hotmail.com

Posted: I like it.If it were me, I'd be exploring the relationship between repetitive chanting and repetitive movement. Use words that sound like the moves feel maybe.I dunno - I'm not sure I understand what your on about, but I think I see where you are going with your zen doctrine of Stick. You may or may not be aware of the different kinds of Zen that have tool manipulation components. Inner Peace is a big part of Bushido (One Traditional Japanese Warriors Code), which I know was critical to the Samurai (highly codified Japanese warriors). There is also Zen Archery (I think).Anyhow - I find it all very interesting.Josh

Posted: No Nix, you're from Europe.I'm from England. A tad more specific.I was from Here and there in England. But mostly now I'm here so I altered it to simply read England. And the foundation's idea sounds like something Charles would do. Only he'd have a unicycle and some "bad" juggling in there somewhere

Posted: in my experience the moves that flow with sticks or any sort of toy we enjoy playing with stem from (now this is just my opinion) from how we breath and the corresponding chakras and energy centres that are activated by the combinmation of breath movement and thought. these beleifs have come from a fair old wack at martial arts and also the practise of druidic psychic magik. like josh said the use of mantras can have a great effect on how we move and the sort of internal energy we can all tapp into.but dont focus to much on the spiritual side of it all, down that road lies the city of navel gazing!!. maybe something a bit more accessable to the masses like purity of movement?anyway good luck

Posted: What about a performance poetry session as your way of expressing? I can see you stick in one hand, then reciting a couple of lines of the poem, then doing a 'move' and freezing at that move, then expressing the words, then expressing the move. Then freezing again. the words come when you are in that 'still state of mind' that meditation brings. The movement shows how you express this externally....Don't know if that helps, best of luck with it all.

Posted: Cheers guys,Coursemap, In GB at the mo, no plans to travel till the summer, sorry.Mellissa, please dont correct my spelling and gramer unless you havent actually understood my meaning. I cant spell for sh*t and I know it but I can write a damm good poem. However, your input on the content of the piece would be most apreachaited (you see, terrible).Jhonathan, nice angle, and one I'd like to explore further. Does anyone have any martial arts/buddist etc. texts that I might seek out on the subject of movement and energy?Ade, I was thinking more about having a radio mike and performing the routine and poem simultainiously (yes, wrong, I know) using the pulse made by the fire as my basis for the rythum of the poem.Cantus, got some stella in the fridge (it was on special) want some? or anyone else?cheers for the input,LoveNics [This message has been edited by Nix? Posted: most ti chi books will have something about internal energy in them, but the one book i'd recommend is by master hee il cho its the third in a series of three books entitled the complete tae kwon do hyung. ive got a copy, but its the only one ive ever seen, and i got it second hand by a mysterious stroke of good fortune!! the intro to the second edition is nearly as good.uuhhhmmmmm the net has lots of stuff about chakras and meridian lines. if you look hard youll find stuff about their corresponding colours and elements, plus how they are thought to interact with meridian lines running thruogh our bodies, the path of the internal ki.i think its interesting anyway, having a bit more knowledge of how to distribute and redirect internal energies has certainly made me buzz out a lot more doing the poi. but take it all with a pinch of salt, theres alot of dodgy shit around about spirituality and all that guff. the stick you spin can be just as effective in terms of spells and all that shite as a $400 dollar quartz mystical channeling rod.so there you go- energy, colours and perhaps a liberal dose of acid to get things rolling (just kidding!!)

Posted: Good stuff Nix?, the performance you have in mind sounds great. The pulse of the fire is similar to the pulse I was trying to get at in the stop/start sort of performance. Let us know how it goes.

Posted: well guys,I got my preliminary 'work-in-progress' showing on wednesday and I got a little routeen sorted out for it so Ill be ok.Ive been thinking some more about the final performance. I want to seperate the body from the stick. I want to progect one image that is me doing the performance with a white suit and a black stick against a black background (life size), so you only see the motions of the body. At the same time I perform the same series of moves live beside it with a black suit on a black background but with a UV painted stick and blacklights. This way you only see the stick. Sound good? There is one thing Ive been pondering that has been inspired by the 'natural alternative' thread. Should I do the body section naked? It would make sence and my body is a white as the driven snow so it would show up.The problem is that this may make the body too explicit and introduce the theme of sex into the mix, which I dont think I want for this performance (highly unusual for me!). If i did it semi naked, with some trunk on or something, the problem still exists because why have I covered it up? Maybe a white boiler suit is best?cheers for the input guys, its a real help.LoveNix
