Has anyone ever tried this? Or does anyone do Kamas? I'm thinking of getting a pair plus a book or video. I looks interesting, and it's nothing you see on a regular basis. I'm just wondering if it'd be possible to mount small wicks on them. Small to avoid burning yourself.

second what bender said..6 out of 8 girlfriends have banned kama's from the bedroom wink

they're great fun tho, good for pruning bushes..wicking a pair? sounds great, I just dunno how much of a visual display it would be over, say swinging clubs..Less you added some kusari to that kama, but it would be extremely dangerous with fully sharpened kama, more dangerous than fire knifes since the blades r sharper eek lemme kno how it goes, I've got someone bugging me to wick a pair for them here

so much blade for so little handle, I'd presume that protective clothing/gloves would be an important consideration, if one was absolutely determined to wick a pair up!

if i were to do this i'd dull the edges down alot and make sure there's 100% coverage of the blade. I wouldn't want to slip up and loose an arm.

This seems to be down that whole line of thinking that followed fire swords. "Is it still a sword if it's not sharp?" We do these arts for the movement and display and whatever reasons we have and danger is a part of the thrill initially, but playing with knives really ups the ante. Sharp things remove things. We know that the fire in fire twirling is generally a controllable risk and some of us will hit ourselves on purpose as a wrap move, so is a weapon that has been altered to be, "safer" still what it was? Who cares really? I want burny versions of those things! beerchug
Let your mind wander by doing a search for "Shaolin Weapons". Bender will testify to the awesome array of hurty things those boys are packin. I'd love to see some Shaolin monks with fire meteor or something

hiya. my mates got a pair of kama, there great for cutting up bushes. :lol. but you can buy dull blade kama (non-sharpened blades). i might convince my mate to put wicks on them.

the time has come to talk of many things of shoes and ships and sealing wax, cabbages and kings.

I second the reccomendation of dull metal Kama, and wooden ones for practice. I've got a set of those wooden ones right here at home, hiding somewhere in the "Basket of Doom" behind my bedroom door. (I've got so many wooden swords that I finally bought a large round wicker laundry hamper to hold them all in)

As for the argument "is it still real if it's dull?" I say yes. I own two blunted medieval style swords intended for martial arts, stage combat, and reenactment. They've got some real weight to them and are capable of causing serious harm if mishandled. In other words, they are not swords to screw around with.

Kasura-gama, you mean? That's the term for Kamas with a chain on the handle. Sadly, they're illegal here in Canada, and as with any chain weapon, they're a major hazard to the user if mishandled. Know the law in your area, even if the law might suck. And stick with the regular Kama first.

Dark Devil, do you have any interest in studying Karate? The kama and sai are traditional weapons taught in most schools of Karate. If you do, ask the local schools if they offer weapons training, and under what terms. Some schools want you to earn a specific belt first, others want you to spend a certian amount of time as a student first.

If there are not any schools in your area, you don't have the time or money for lessons, or Karate's just not your martial art of choice, then I agree with the book or video. It's better than no instruction at all.
