Hey all! So these girls of the famous website have a US tour working. I am a big burlesque fan, and liked what the suicide girls stood for so I was really looking forward to the show. I wasted $10 and several hours of my time.
The fact that the show was supposed to start at 9, and the girls never made an appearance until 12 didn't really piss me off. That is usually to be expected.
The fact that there was no warning that they were going to spray beer all over everyone and dowse the entire crowd with chocolate and reddi whip was irritating, especially since I got beer in my eye and chocolate stains on one of my favorite shirts.
The fact that neither opening band was particularly good, and in fact the first one was boo-ed off the stage was annoying.
The fact that they called one of the most sub-standard shows I have ever seen in my life Burlesque was completely insulting. They didn't dance. They kind of stuck up their middle fingers and ripped their clothes off not even finding the beat of the music. Their costumes...well let's just say the local salvation army has better selection. They did have decent music, and I say that because it is music I use to teach Burlesque to. They were so bad at the stripping that even the drunks in the audience were mocking them instead of cheering them on.
If it comes to your town, there is going to be a pretty big promotional hype, I can pretty much garuntee it. Don't bother. Take your ten bucks, go to the local strip joint and buy yourself a couple drinks. The show will be better and the money more wisely spent.

yes, i'd hafta agree. Their show was weak! I wished they would have gone off more. I'm used to the idea of Burlesque having many, many more layers of fancy and creative costume pieces to discard lascivously. The cheerleader vs. the smoking goth girl was my favorite scenario but they definately could've gotten a little more hair pulling and clothing ripping rage in there. It was inspiring just cuz it sorta sucked and could be so much better. hope to see locals do it better! maybe me?

Burlesque is not stripping, though it did give birth to stripping.
It is actually Sexual Satire, comedy, music and dance done in a provacotive and sexy manner...without taking it all off. It started in the 1860's and was quite a revolutionary coo in the feminist movement. It became very high brow and intelligent but funny and satiristic.
Of course, it deviated into show hall girls in some places and the "hootchie kooch" for the blowoff at carnivals, especially when men took over management in the 1880's. For some reason they just encouraged the girls to take off more clothes!
Of course in the 30's and 40's the trasition from Burlesque (traditionally done Vaudvillian style in a theater or as an accompaniment to sideshows and magic) crossed over into the realm of pasties and Vaudville clubs started to be all about the bare women and less about the acts...hence giving way to the ever popular strip clubs.
But yeah...it is a form of tasteful theater dance that does not bare all...contrary to popular belief.
But then, I can babble for ages about this stuff....so I will quit while I am ahead with a gentle reminder that..You asked! lol

I love Dirty Martini. And *BOB*. And Lady Ace who has an awsome sense of humor. My favorite to date, though, are the World Famous Pontani Sisters (I think that's how you spell it). They're so cute and fun and their outfits are fantastic.
I've thought a *lot* about doing burlesque. A lot a lot. And I have a few ideas that I think would work. I guess I don't know what to do with them. Or maybe I'm a chicken.

gotta agree with you pele. just goes to show what funding and a good booking agent can do for a crap show, that was the worst ten bucks thousands of people ever spent. and they even had tape on their nipples! it looks like they spent about 5 minutes rehearsing. for ten bucks, i better see either a good show or some REAL NIPPLES!!!!!! and only one performer girl that i would even make out with, and i know they have cuter girls on their site

Who? Me? Not sure but here goes...
Since I started getting into makeup there are a few themes I often think about with regard to beauty. "Beauty." One of them is race. And another is age.
So my idea is to start with an old woman - grey hair and a moo moo - knitting or whatever. Beside her is a photo of her younger burlesque self. She puts on some latin tune (I used to do a lot of latin dancing) and starts to dance as best she can. The music steps up and so does she - the moo moo comes off and her burlesque self appears, twiriling around and whatnot. Still w grey hair. Maybe at the end she can toss the moo moo aside and pick up the knitting in burlesque clothes. Or put it back on - "so there" style.
It would also be fun to mix burlesque with flag dancing. Maybe come out wearing the flags, then rip them off and spin them.
So many possibilities....

I like the aging women one. Very theatrical. Have you ever been to Burlesque on the Beach down at Coney Island? When I was in NYC this past weekend I went to check out Va-Voom but it was cancelled for the night

Theatrical burlesque sounds superfun. I saw a great nurse/patient act once. And yes, lots of overlap with sideshow. I think that's a very entertaining - and marketable - combo. As far as finding an agent.... consider sending an email to the Pontani sisters. A photographer friend of mine did that once, asking if he could shoot them. And they said sure. The shoot was scheduled outdoors on a *freezing* cold day and they showed, skimpy outfits and all. (I met them that day actually - they're so nice.) If you explain your situation they might be able to recommend someone.
