Well?
how many of you manage to get arrested/ beaten up/ water cannoned over the Mayday weekend? Hope you're all having a good time, and I'm sure that the water cannon helped keep you cool after a busy day marching! cool

Lots of protest marches in Lima and Pisco as well but the cops took a decidedly low key approach to the whole affair, and seemed to spend most of the time talking to the marchers about the local football league, which seems to be more violent and passionate than any march in Dublin, by about a factor of 10.

Pisco is abou 20 times more fun than Lima, everyone's very relaxed and seem to have more time to relax into the day, rather than going at it full tilt with their hand on the horn. wink

Tried the "Pisco sour" which is a drink made from the local liqour egg white and lemon juice. "Meh, not great", I thought, so I went on to PISCO PURA! the good stuff, which seemed to put me a good couple of steps above the others in the hostel according to the locals. They were especially impressed the next morning when I was fresh as a daisy had a big ol' breakfast and went off on a boat trip at 6:30, just as everyone else was dragging their sorry asses out of bed, with many a groan and whimper.

The boat trip was to "Guano Island" I can't remember the proper name in spanish. Anywho it was to a huge island where about a gazillion birds live wow, pelicans, peruvian terns, turkey vultures, penguins, cormorants and a whole load more that I can't remember at the moment.

That was followed by a trip to the Paracas nature reserve, one of the most desolate places I've ever seen. The landscape seemed to be there just to hold up the rocks, and the rocks were there just to be turned into sand.
It was very beautiful though, and the first time since I arrived in Peru that it's actually been quiet. I can see why it holds such an attraction for some, the sand looks like the sea, complete with waves and sometimes rocks poking above the surface.
Beautiful, and not as barren as at first glance, little foxes, lizards and grasses manage to survive here, as well as the turkey vultures, always waitng at the end of the road.
Life always finds a way.

We also saw the "Candellabra" a great big design etched into the rock on the side of a hill facing the sea, various theories abound as to its origin from pre-inca sun worshipers to masonic stonecutters and alien space craft (those little gray dudes get everywhere don't they?) rolleyes

Had a few beers with some folks doing volunteer work last night, lots of fun up on a balcony over the street, I was the only one not smoking.
Normally thhis wouldn't mean much, but as it happened I was the only one to notice the strange smell, and then the smoke.
More smoke than there should be.
And the smell...sort of fiery...
And the people below, shouting, "fuego!, fuego!" --fire! fire!--
Hmmm...... devil ubbidea

Oh look, here comes the fire brigade...and another fire engine...running in next door...with hoses...
So we spent the evening getting beers in beside a full-on blaze that took the fire department two hours to put out, good beer though....

I'll be off to Nazca tomorrow, spending the night there and seeing the lines the next morning. Decided to splash out on a flight over the lines, had to be done, had to be done.

Talk to me folks!,
Martin

I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.

Well,
no pics yet cause I can't find an internet place that will let me hook up my camera to their precious, precious machines. rolleyes
May have to wait until I get up the coast a bit more, oh well.
How many pics can I upload to the gallery anyway? or is it based on total space used?

Got to Nazca today and I'll be taking a dawn flight over the Nazca lines tomorrow, lets see if I can't find any alien landing sites, eh? biggrin

It's hot, damn hot, hot and dry I can feel it up in my nose and sinuses (maybe my head will shrivel up like a raisin)

Anywho, off to bed soon,
early start in the morning,
martin bye
