I know that it's kinda of disheartening to some that I do poi with a tip jar, and some people have given me quite a bit of [censored] over it in the past...

For the record, I go to the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University... school costs me close to 25 grand a year after scholarships drop about 20,000$ off the normal price. I work two to three jobs and pay or take loans out to cover every penny.

In my free time I like to twirl fire... it's art... people pay to see ballets... operas... musicals... and concerts... why is it so bad to accept money from those who happen to come across my personal artwork and enjoy watching it? I mean [censored], I personally believe that the fact that the money I make goes to paying for an education and the things related to going to college is a lot more respectable than "artists" like Britney Spears who charge a few hundred dollars for front row seats or 20$ for a CD that cost thirty cents to make.

That's just my opinion... I'm kinda curious why some people think it's immoral to "twirl for tips" as I'm calling it... confused

I don't see anything wrong with it - You have to pay for your gear, and replace it when it dies, and you have to provide your own kero or fuel of choice.

People don't HAVE to give you tips, altho if they enjoy themselves and wish to contribute what they think a bit of enjoyment is worth, then why not then?

Good for you, use the money to further fund your fire hobby or your education - either way, i say good for you! beerchug

I smile because i have no idea whats going on!! biggrin

It may cost 30 cents to make a CD, but from the $20 you pay, 1/3 goes to the shop for selling it, 40% (in the UK) goes to the songwriter (i.e not Britney), management will take a hefty cut, the session musicians take a fee (per track in some cases), production costs, studio hire etc etc. Britney probably makes about 2 cents MAX off a CD.
This is why pop bands tour so much - there's no money in them for CD sales as they don't write the songs.
As for concert seat prices - people buy them at those prices, it's a consumer marketplace, supply & demand etc.

Aaaaaaanyway, you busk away - good on you smile I don't think anyone here is going to have a go at you for busking.

The immoral thing you're thinking of is more when people do full gigs for free/beer/cheap

I once saw a girl busking with tails for about 3 hours without even music. She deserved everything she got for all that graft.

umm

i don't really understand - if you are a professional and you choose to do a gig for free or at a reduced price, how is it 'immoral'?

because by doing things for free (unless for a mate or something) then it makes people think it's worth less and pushes down the price that people who rely on it for a living can charge.

among other things.

that doesn't mean it's immoral not to charge, but there should be a specific difference between doing a gig for free and being able to play with poi in a public place.

Sorry, mine was a bit of a flippant comment without much context.

Of course there will always be occasions where it's fine to do a freebie - Burnt Toast have done a couple of charity do's for free for example.

There's a couple of threads about the rights and wrongs of doing freebies...

I'm all for busking. Havent done it yet, but when im better, i might. I would have to say that someone spinning fire, or ribbons, or glosticks or whatever would have to be less annoying, heard for less distance, and all round better than some dodgy looking old guy with a beat up guitar and no teeth trying to sing some crusty old bushwhackin' song.

but thats just me
