Well, me and Mrs Durbs have just booked our flights to (and from) Italy
We're flying out to Bolgna and flying back from Rome 2 weeks later biggrin

All the guide books seem to suggest that accomodation isn't the cheapest in Italy, and I know from when I've been before that eating out (and drinking especially) is pretty expensive and wondered if any of you globe trotters knew of any good, cheap places to stay in Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio etc?

We'll be taking a tent as a back-up, but would prefer dorms, dives or the like...

Also, anyone been to Elba and know if it's worth a visit?

Ciao! wink

Accomodation is cheap, food is cheap...if you live like a local, and I also happen to know that you only have to pay 30% of train travel cus its 70% subsidised by the gov!

Camping's quite good in Italy...cus it's popular, and I think you can hire out like little cabin like things on some campsites.

By living like a local I mean shop in the supermarkets and eat and drink in local places. For example I bought a litre of Peroni in one place in Rome for 1.5 Euros where as a pint of Kronemburg in another was 4 Euros!

Hope this helps! Check out www.virtualtourist.com it's quite gud!

This is a great site for traveling... Backpackers can write in and review hostels etc. It has a list of most hostels in europe and I found it really useful when traveling.
I hope it's useful : )

What if I should fall right through the centre of the Earth and come out the other side where people walk upside-down?!

Elba is a beautiful place and worth visiting.

Firenze, Pisa, Rome, Milano and also worth visiting.

Tuscany is one of the most fantastic places but then you will be landing just the other side of the mountains from my house... about 200km.

Restaurants are expensive or can be, be choosy, use supermarkets!!!, local shops are really expensive for fresh meats etcetera, you will get better deals at the supermarket and every thing.

BRING YOUR OWN TEABAGS!!!, because you won't find good PG here... only twynings crap.

Try not to be an ignorant tourist, or the anti British Italian mob will treat you like crap too. they are every where.

Tuscany is fantastic but expensive... try living here wink it isn't easy.

And if your in PISA!! call me and I come for coffee with you. ubbrollsmile

So what dates are you here for?, I'm in England from the 5th-19th of August and at home here 19th-26th at a loose end.

As for jugglers etc... wait till you get to Rome... speak to Nix? and see what he knows is happening... ie: meetings etcetera.

Other advice... come out of season here!! it's less expensive.

Given the date when Durbs started this i'm assuming this is no longer current for him, but in order to help some other people:

Cinque Terre
and
Lake Como!!!!!

i would have changed ***** to phallus, and claire to petey Petey

Rougie: but that's what I'm doing here
Arnwyn: what letting me adjust myself in your room?..don't you dare quote that on HoP...

Last time I was in Rome for a weekend I drove to Cassino/Monte Cassino for one day of it. Probably not your average touristy place but if you have any connection with soldiers who fought in Italy it is well worth a visit.

I have several large jars of the stuff. I actually like it... a little. And don't tell anyone I admitted to it.
