So, I moved to Chapel Hill almost a year ago. Before that, I lived in Houston, where many really spiffy people spin fire. I spun practice poi, and admired the fire people for their daring. (Admiring them for their skill goes almost without saying, though it deserves to be said.)
When I got here, I worked a whole lot. And eventually, I started taking yoga. When I saw the rooms the classes were in, with their big high ceilings, I just knew that they would make great rooms to spin in. I asked the people about maybe using their rooms, and what I wanted to do... they asked if I could maybe teach poi there.
Just as soon as I get good, I'll think about it.
That being said, I need to start practicing again, so I can get good. I'm hoping that there are people here in the Raleigh - Durham area with whom I can practice.

Welcome to HoP Numen! Never been to the Carolina's before but I understand that the country is beautiful.
Growing old is mandatory; growing up is NOT. Proud member of the HoP DPS. Sanity is a highly overrated state of mind. I'm normal ... it's everyone else that's crazy.

If you're from Houston, that means I've probably met you. Thanks for the kind words about the peeps around here. They are an amazing bunch in so many ways.
Just keep up the practicing, and I'm sure one day soon you will indeed be able to teach those classes...It's what your teacher down here did.
Posted: Yes, we've met. I was just starting to get comfortable with all the new (wonderful) people I met at Flipside and AA, and Laura's classes. And then I left Houston.
It's not that I grew up sheltered, exactly. I just didn't get out much, until much later in life.
So, AFTER I wrote my intro post, I started scanning through everyone else's posts... and realized that I'd been very cagey in what I said about myself. So... let me give the verbose description, instead.
My name is Aaryn. I'm 30 years old. I was raised in the Air Force, so I can't really claim to have grown up anywhere. If any place, Houston would be it, and I didn't get there until college. Unlike most military brats, I got to live in wonderful and exotic places, like Kansas, rural Massachusettes, and Lompoc California. All of my friends spent time in Germany and Japan. But, I'm the only kid on my block to have kicked a nuke, so I guess it all balances out.
The unpleasant side effect of moving around is that every couple of years, I would lose all my friends, and have to make new ones. By the time I started elementary school, I kind of gave up trying. I'm a voracious reader, though.
When I got to college, I met a group of people with just as little social skillz as me, and we all bonded quite well. But, we also used each other to learn to be around people, and I like to think that I'm no longer that guy who pushes everyone else away in his flailing attempts to get to know people.
Eventually, a friend of a friend of my then fiancée (now wife) told us about Flipside, and how great it was. We went (don't ask how we managed to get tickets, but we did), and had a great time. While there, I saw fire spinning for the first time. Eventually, I discovered that Laura was giving lessons in town, and I signed up. From that class, I heard about other gatherings in town, and started showing up when I could. (I'm not sure how much info is too much to give about other people in Houston, so I'll stop here.)
So, my wife was accepted to the University of North Carolina, here in Chapel Hill, so I moved out and got a job. And a REALLY crappy apartment, that I found on the Internet. We're supposedly buying a house, but they're taking far too long to finish it. So mostly I work, and wait for my stuff to get out of storage. I miss my stuff. All the art is packed away. Almost all the furniture, as well. All the books... oh the poor books. I need my books... it's been almost a year since I had my books.
So anyway, I'd like to do something other than work, and start meeting new people again. I'm out of practice.
