It seems that a thread has dissapeared, the one about the avatar with the swastica on it and whether it was offensive.

Presumably it got out of hand and was deleted?

A shame as it had some interesting points on it.

It occurred to me that maybe it would be good, when a thread is deleted, for some kind of message to be left in it's place saying why exactly it has been taken down.

This would serve both to soften the blow for those who put effort into contributing to the deleted thread, and make more clear to board users exactly what is, and what isn't, acceptable to post.

I agree OWD. The topic starter actually requested Malcolm to delete the thread, and he did.

I did it once because I had caused undue controversy in the community.

I believe the poster of that thread (nobly) did the same thing.

Hello and morning everyone,

I didn't realise there was anything that offensive on that thread. Certainly it touched on sensitive issues, but surely it is important that such issues are discussed and not ignored? Maybe it got really out of hand after I went to bed last night?!

Anyways, I understand why Malcolm took such action if it was requested directly.
Tis just a pity.

I hope my comments didn't offend anyone. I felt it was an interesting discussion arising from a negative situation, which has got to be a good thing.

I totally agree that it's a great idea for deleted or locked threads to have a reason posted - even if only that we don't encroach on sensitive issues that are likely to stop discussion mid-flow again.

What a wonderful miracle if only we could look through each other's eyes for an instant.

Yeah, I thought it was one of the most civilised discussions of the swastika issue that I've seen online for a while (this comes up regularly on fetish club boards, and usually is a lot more heated and less open to reason). The original post was a bit puerile, but the ensuing discussion was quite interesting.

I think it's one of the strengths of HOP social board that controversial topics do get discussed calmly and rationaly, in a way that doesn't happen on a lot of other forums.

Obviously there's been many occasions when threads have got out of hand on HOP, and action has been required (deleting threads, even a few bans).

But there's a pattern of them being dealt with effectively by a good mod team, then the same issues coming up but not getting out of hand.

It may take a few phases for that to happen, and obviously requires work both from the mods and board members (who have to take the suggestions on board and become more self moderating) but I think it's much better than the alternative of just banning the subject outright, as these disussions are one of the aspects that makes HOP one of the community boards that it's worth while being a member of.

A good example is the subject of religion which, at one point, was guaranteed to result in mayhem, but, over the past few months there's been some decent and non-hostile threads on the subject.

I also miss the thread in question, despite it's dodgy start, it was turning into an interesting discussion.

Would it be possible to resurrect it, minus the original posters posts (as they requested the deletion), retitle it 'Swastica discussion' and insert a brief intro explaining the changes?

Or maybe make it breifly availabe as 'view only' so those interested can copy and paste their posts, and then we can put up a new thread on the subject using those posts.

That's okay - the only reason we keep you around is so that we can talk about you behind your back and use you as an example of what not to do.

OWD - I like your idea of resurrecting that thread, but it will be Malcolm's decision in this instance.

From the original poster !!!!
The thread was requested to be deleted because it had gotten out of hand, what was intended as a thread to look at our attachment to symbols and there use (albeit dodgily presented\worded, soz i'm not the brightest button in the box)
and not as a statement by myself of hatred or racism, which it was starting to be taken as.
All in all I was looking for reasonable debate, alll in all I got bashed ! However I am very glad to see the discussion raging on.

Here's a thought on deleting posts.
Is it possible to actually remove them entirely from the board?
Case in point being the music threads... I tried a seach on "Copying Music Sharing" and it returns loads of results - about a third of which are **Deleted**. or locked But they aren't - they're still there, just locked, which is really annoying as it makes a search fruitless, Likewise a seach for "coloured flames" produces results all of which end with "Please do a search" and then it is locked. But if you search you just find lots of other threads all saying "Do a search" and being locked. Surely, if they were deleted it would make the search function much more useful...

I just did a search on "Copying Music Sharing", but only got one result, which was this thread we're in now; so I'm not fully sure what the deleted threads in question are like.

Do they contain posts? If so then aren't they of value for information purposes.

I agree that if the threads contain no useful info (and it sounds like that's the case with the 'colored flames' ones), that they'd be better removed; I'm just concerned that some locked threads do have posts that people have put a lot of effort into, and it's always a shame when they get thrown away.
