When you say a C shape are you just talking about:

AAAAA
A
A
AAAAA

That sort of thing? What help do you want with CSS?

Would this be better in the help section?

yes

so it would be

AAAAAAAA

ABBBBBB

ABBBBBB

ABBBBBB

AAAAAAAA

where B is enclosed by A, B being the active iframe area

ok, got it. and "A" will be a header/footer/menu? with "B" being the content? I'll put something together for you - I hope i've got the right idea!

iframes rock, just started getting into them myself, they are totally simple if you are using dreamweaver.

Just make a table with the correct number of rows and columns that you need, then click on a cell and hit the iframe button, it'll insert the iframe tags for you and then all you need to do is point it to an http.

You can use an iframe anywhere you would use an image, which is very handy.

the layout of the page idea has now changed some whot

it should not go

AAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAA
ABBBBBBA
ABBBBBBA
ABBBBBBA
AAAAAAAA

where a is custom built graphics, and B is the active I frame

and A builds a solid frame in tables around teh i frame

so thet teh page, and graphic stay in teh same place and teh i frame scrolls with the info in it....

does that make any sence?

iframes rock

They have very few good uses and endup making pages inaccessible and hard for search bots to crawl. I would never use one on a site and I never have done. Also the idea that you should build a table around iframes makes me want to puke!

Mech, what are you reasons for using iframes? have you thought about the rich, healthy world of CSS? what will the content of the iframe be? Are you using a server side script and thereofore includes?

I will make a template without the iframes for you to look at. Have you got a design drawn up yet? if you send it over I can just HTML it for you.

Fair play sym, i hardly touch html, i code flash mainly.

I do however have a page set up with 4 cells and 4 iframes so i can view hop, spherculism, pip and soton website all on one page, it works a treat. If one page is downloading i just flick my eyes to the side to catch up on another. Particularly useful with dual monitors. And it loads all 4 sites as quick as if they are on separate tabs. So what's the problem with that?

oh, none at all, thats a good use of them. But I can't think of a time when they should be used above 'standard' ways of laying out a page.

What you're trying isn't something most people would want a web page to do.

I find Firefox tabs work for me, but we all use our computers in different ways. wink

frames bad, tables good. If it's just text to be displayed in the frame, don't rule out using a textarea using css to make it look a bit nicer than the one i'm typing in right now.

If you wanna use an iframe how you descibe, just do it as a cell in table with no border/spacing/padding, and the background image of the entire table as the image you want. Then you can add text or whatever else in the other cells if needs be, and will be shown ontop of your image. I assume that's what you want.

dude! iframes suck!

Set it up as a div and in css provide it with your ideal height. I think it's easier and all your content is on one page - easier to update.
And accessibility wise (not that that's an issue for you) it's easier to cope with.

.DivName { width:300px; height:300px; overflow:auto; }
