Jonny Ucof and I are back at the princess palace safe and well with tea and spliff. I might even cook for him later wink

It's been a really wierd day to be in central London. The first I knew anything about it was at about 9.30 when one of the girls phoned to say they were having problems on the tube. Then Bam's phoned me and told me about the explosion at Liv street and was I ok?

All day we were finding out about all the different blasts from the internet (and Skully hug I found out more from you than I did from the crappy BBC wink ). But it kinda was "business as usual". Because of the terrorist link we were told we could leave at about 3ish and that the office will be closed tomorrow "so don't come in" (which is good!). As Orangebobo said everythign in the west end just closed down.

And then we started our mission home. We walked from Tottenham Court Road to Liverpool Street - which was surprisingly quick and we now know where the Old Bailey is and loads of other interesting facts wink. Luckily Liverpool Street had re-opened, and we got a train, and then a bus and we were home by 6pm biggrin

As Gabe said we didn't see any "carnage" or "destruction" walking through the city - not even at Liverpool Street. Roads were cordoned off but all you could see was people, LOTS of people just walking to get home.

The attacks seemed fairly contained. Seeing it all on the news tonight has made me think. As skully just said this could have been a HELL of a lot worse.

Maybe I would feel differently if I worked in an area that had been attacked... shrug I dunno. ...I don't think it's all sunk in yet. Like I say it's been a spooky day.

Blimey! Long post redface

I hope and pray tonight that everyone you know is also safe and well.

love to everyone ubblove

I was about to go to bed, but just got an unofficial update. Current toll on BBC online is 37. Friend of mine who's a tv cameraman in the uk said that the toll was at least 45, then revised it to 150-200. I do hope he's wrong.

im still hearing 37 dead. all the bus services in area 1 are back up aparently and they are going to open the jubily, picadilly and northen line late tonight tho they are only very limited service.

i think that it is about 150-200 critical or server injuries so the 37 number might go up

also if anyone is still worried bout someone and cant get hold of them try phoning 08701566344 tho bear with the people running the service thy are getting something like 50,000 call per hour

Hels, I'm totally with you on that wierdness thing. I arrived in Euston just as they closed the tube, was about to get on a bus to go past Russell Sq but decided I needed a pee before I went - it was when I was on the loo they evacuated Euston and by the time I came out, they were RUNNING people out of the station - feck, that was wierd.

Then i got in the office, went in a meeting and knew nothing til 12.30 at lunch break - 8 txtx n 3 voicemails saying 'are you alright - call me' and 'please tell me you're not in London today'

I really started to think 'oh sh**', I might not get home , this is serious.

As it happened, I ended up walking from Cov Gdn to Euston, picked up a couple of new buddies along the way, went for a beer - London was so so quiet, just pedestrians, everyone knew it was bad but no-onepaniced, no-one goet stressed out, the police were fantastic (never thouht I'd say that!!), so helpful, again so calm.

And I got to Euston, and I got back home and now I'm watching it on the TV and thinking - I was so very close to all of this - and now I feel quite, well, odd, like I shouldn't be here

sorry, babbling

We can thank the emergency services for keeping the death toll so low.

They were on hand extremely quickly (especially as the bus was blown up just outside the British Medical Association and there were trained doctors inside!) - all emergency services carried out their jobs calmly and efficiently.

Well done and huge cheers for them clap bounce clap

As for the internet sites... well, surely there would be more of an outcry if govenments started to really police the internet?

It's being monitored for terrorist-related activity and paedophilia already (hence the large number of recent arrests)... but you can't get everyone.

The group that claimed responsibility is a fringe organisation who apparently spelled their Qur'an quote incorrectly - leading to doubt over its authenticity. Also, from what I heard on the news, it's an open forum, so any random person can post on it anonymously. Wait and see.

Flashpoint, there are those that would argue that terrorism and violence does succeed. It succeeds in drawing attention to a cause...

And that's why the message they're sending out is to unite with UK muslims to fight them, not fight the UK muslims or there really will be a war but fought internally - they'll have won.

But I don't hold out much hope of it lasting, hope I'm wrong

ok, i've deleted my above posts before I go to bed, as they're beyond the topic of the thread. I did some digging around and found some worrying things, but I'm sure that conspiracy stories will circle for years and this isn't the time nor the place.

back in work - the city almost seems normal today.

i don't want to comment any more than that right now.

our mayor said this yesterday, and i don't think anyone could have said it better:

“This was a cowardly attack, which has resulted in injury and loss of life. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been injured, or lost loved ones. I want to thank the emergency services for the way they have responded.

Following the al-Qaeda attacks on September 11 in America we conducted a series of exercises in London in order to be prepared for just such an attack. One of the exercises undertaken by the government, my office and the emergency and security services was based on the possibility of multiple explosions on the transport system during the Friday rush hour. The plan that came out of that exercise is being executed today, with remarkable efficiency and courage, and I praise those staff who are involved.

I’d like to thank Londoners for the calm way in which they have responded to this cowardly attack and echo the advice of the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair - do everything possible to assist the police and take the advice of the police about getting home today.

I have no doubt whatsoever that this is a terrorist attack. We did hope in the first few minutes after hearing about the events on the Underground that it might simply be a maintenance tragedy. That was not the case. I have been able to stay in touch through the very excellent communications that were established for the eventuality that I might be out of the city at the time of a terrorist attack and they have worked with remarkable effectiveness. I will be in continual contact until I am back in London.

I want to say one thing specifically to the world today. This was not a terrorist attack against the mighty and the powerful. It was not aimed at Presidents or Prime Ministers. It was aimed at ordinary, working-class Londoners, black and white, Muslim and Christian, Hindu and Jew, young and old. It was an indiscriminate attempt to slaughter, irrespective of any considerations for age, for class, for religion, or whatever.

That isn’t an ideology, it isn’t even a perverted faith - it is just an indiscriminate attempt at mass murder and we know what the objective is. They seek to divide Londoners. They seek to turn Londoners against each other. I said yesterday to the International Olympic Committee, that the city of London is the greatest in the world, because everybody lives side by side in harmony. Londoners will not be divided by this cowardly attack. They will stand together in solidarity alongside those who have been injured and those who have been bereaved and that is why I’m proud to be the mayor of that city.

Finally, I wish to speak directly to those who came to London today to take life.

I know that you personally do not fear giving up your own life in order to take others - that is why you are so dangerous. But I know you fear that you may fail in your long-term objective to destroy our free society and I can show you why you will fail.

In the days that follow look at our airports, look at our sea ports and look at our railway stations and, even after your cowardly attack, you will see that people from the rest of Britain, people from around the world will arrive in London to become Londoners and to fulfil their dreams and achieve their potential.

They choose to come to London, as so many have come before because they come to be free, they come to live the life they choose, they come to be able to be themselves. They flee you because you tell them how they should live. They don’t want that and nothing you do, however many of us you kill, will stop that flight to our city where freedom is strong and where people can live in harmony with one another. Whatever you do, however many you kill, you will fail.”

- Ken Livingstone (Mayor of London), 7 JUly 2005
