Ok...I managed to blow the engine on my fantastic car yesterday and am in desperate need to get a new one...
I am looking at 3 different ones tonight and have limited info but anyones knowledge would help greatly..

1- Pugeot 306 - M reg, 1.4L, petrol, silver (cost 350)
2- Vauxhall Frontera - K reg, green, petrol (cost 1100)
3- Vauxhall Vectra - R reg, yellow, 2.0L turbo, diesel, X-taxi, 190,000 miles (cost 750)

any info on problems, effeciency (lots of motorway driving) standard book price etc greatly appreciated

Right...
1. Whats your budget?
2. Mileage should be about 10000 a year from reg yr.
3. Do not buy any of those, as they will break down, unless they have full service history, and low low mileage
4. Look at parkers price guide www.parkers.co.uk and compare...
I've just bought an r reg Fiesta, now called Fiona, who is very nice and nippy (its got a Zetec S engine in it!)

All got full service history,
Unfortunately budget is approx 1000, (if worth it)
the thing is I need a car as I cannot afford to traipse to work on the train, and I need it quick.

Right then.
I would go for the Peugeot, as it wont be too much of a loss if it blows up again. The frontera is too much, and the vectra, well, after the brouhaha i had with my Astra, i would never buy another Vauxhall, and if its done 190000 miles, as a taxi, its pretty much ready to blow up...
Check the AA buyers guide for looking for knackered bits at AA.com, i think, its all about rust...
And if you can invest the 35 quid in a AA check as it may have been in an accident or something, or stolen. Get an idea of the history, and go with it.

pugeot's tend to be fairly reliable... my aunt's always driven them... but subaru's are uber reliable... mine's 22 years old, i've had her for 4 years and i've never had a problem with her that couldn't be fixed that day or the next... and it's only once been anything that actually rendered her undriveable...

nice try but GBP3921.22 is a bit out of my price range witha 4 week shipping time at a cost of around GBP2000 inc. UK THC.

(sorry i work in shipping) let alone the import V.A.T
but a nice looking motor..you should have no worries

Want to put a taxi style light on the top saying "SEXY" and one of those taxi style plates on the back with the number 69 so it looks like a cab and i can sneakily use bus lanes... biggrin

Do not, for the love of god, buy the Frontera. It is a TERRIBLE car- it has no off-road credentials and doesn't do that all well on the road either.

The vectra wouldn't be a bad car, but for sheer driving fun and frugality the Peugot looks good- the 306 is a great car.

I'm gonna get the vectra...diesel 550 miles to the tank, smooth, fsh, comfortable to drive...the 306 is cramped (my knees squish against the steering wheel coz i'm quite large) and in bad condition the boot didn't open and the windscreen washers were buggered all this and it was tatty.
the frontera was ok condition but will drink fuel and that is not an option driving 500 miles a week

Just as long as your not buying it from yes car credit (or was it car craft, the names are kinda simalar) because they will give you a piece of junk, there not reliable at all and they will fcuk you around if you have the NERVE to contact them when the car starts to fall apart, how dare you!? :O
