hi all

i have a thought on the use of fingers in staff

from what ive seen of staff twirling it seems to be mainly use of the wrist and hand i have seen nothing where people spin the staff using the fingers, is there any reason for this because it seems like the natural way (to me anyway) to spin a staff,
and it would put a intresting twist perhaps, from the demos on the HOP site (which were really useful) of the staff, fingers cant really be used because the staff is held between the index finger and thumb in most cases

its just a curious thought i had anyway

i am a beginner to staffing by the way so any tips about starting id lurve to hear

thanx all

I spin with my fingers all the time.

I am most partial to a finger spin throw biggrin woooo its cool biggrin

It looks nice on long exposure as well, cos you get many more rotations of the staff.

The existance of flamethrowers says that someone, somewhere, at sometime said "I need to set that thing on fire, but it's too far away."

finger spinning IMHO is the most elegant way to buzzsaw staves.

Personaly im bored of finger spinning because it stays in the same place all the time.

Im more into using as much of your body as possible instead of just giving you a rest while you decide on the next move.

-sandy- there's little need for the rest of the body to immobilise while the fingers do their work. does your hand stay on the same place on the staff when you grip it, dancing as twirlers do?

I'm amazed that i have fought off the temptation of following the innuendo implied in the thread title!

Finger spinning often allows you to do things that otherwise wouldn't be possbile or as nice, like butterfly and TTN with doubles.

As Bender says buzzsaw work well with fingerspin. A nice one is doubles buzzsaw keeping the staffs at 90 degrees to each other.... Not possible without fingers me thinks.... smile

I'm dissapointed bender, these last two posts don't have the drug addled high wit of your normal posts, in fact, they seem almost sensible. You should leave that sort of thing to people without your valued comedy antics. biggrin hug

I love finger spinning - it's not too popular in the UK but finger spinning allows you to do things that aren't possible without such as rotating the body anticlockwise whilst rotating the staff clockwise. Also, with doubles I enjoy finger spinning one staff behind my back whilst effectivly doing single staff with the other hand.

yes gefling, a valuable point - fingerspins allow the continuation of rotation when the elbows, shoulder and body rotation have reached their limits. personally, i would prefer to keep rotation the body rather than the fingers, being that i'd emphasise dance over technical flourish.

perhaps, meg, I am attempting to freak youse out with my remorseless display of sensibilities.
