but seriously, yes, other people do it too. sort of a fascination of mine, trying to figure out how it got around to so many people around the world.

I know an asian girl who is a spinner. Anyone who saw that documentary on violence in Nottingham a few weeks ago on BBC 1(in the UK) will have seen her spinning fire. There was a photo of her spinning commets in mixmag a couple of months back too. She's beautiful.

Are we nearly there yet?

haha, where I'm from there is a large contingent of asian spinners. Some are good, though most stick with glowstick numbchucking. I remember when I was starting out at clubs I'd make sure I didn't spin in front of any people of asian decent, I know it sounds horrible but like 99% of the time they would ask for my strings and show me up The Hmong community up here is large and alot of the kids like the party scene and glowsticks.

I also hear from a friend that the women in Thailand kick extreme ass at poi, or at least from her experience there.

I claim the title of the only Colombian poi person in Minnesota Probably cause I only know like 5 other Colombians and none of them spin, than again we were all adopted into this country and wer fully raised up here, so I can't speak for the more "culturally true" Colombian population up here. Which is small cause mn mainly gets Mexicans and other Central Americans.

But yeah, my point, Caucasians are not the only poi people around me.

That's interesting, Jello. I had heard that most of the Asians in Minneapolis were Vietnamese.

In San Francisco, a lot of the asian kids at raves spin glowsticks, although I don't know of any who spin fire. Bender The Offender is Asian, and I've heard that he spins fire from time to time.

What I've never seen is a Black fire spinner.

Yeah, is there is also a large Vietnamese population as well. It's hard to say which is larger, I think the Hmong immagrants came later than the Vietnamese but I'm not sure. We also have a large Tibetan population, I believe the largest outside of India/Tibet. Thats why the His Holiness came to visit us a year of so back

Besides that we have many Somali immagrants, lots of Latinos, and now a surge of Russian immagrants. I think at my high school there were nearly 20 different languages spoken as first langauges. Yet oddly it seemed soo overwhelmingly white, we were considered the preppy school. Despite what alot of people may believe about the midwest and all, the Twin Cities is rather diverse in that we have a wide variety of minority groups. Still, caucasians are the majority by quite a bit.

In South-Eastern Michigan, we have one of largest Middle-Eastern population in the world outside of the Middle-East. This confuses me. Why did they come HERE of all places? There's rain and snow and lakes and streams all over the place! Michigan is about as unlike the Middle-East as you get! Why not Texas or Arizona or Nevada or something like that?

Also, around here, most of the Asians are Korean in descent. We also have huge Indian and Jewish populations.

At my high school, White Christians were in the minority. A good-sized chunk of the school (almost half) was Jewish. The remainder was carved up between Middle-Eastern, Indian, Korean (only a few non-Asian koreans). The White Christians were maybe 10% of the school and we had like no African-American kids (maybe 8 of them). So everyone said that our school was not diverse. I was like "HUH?" Our school was plenty diverse. We just had no Black kids.

I think thats what gave my shool it's preppy image, we had not as many African American students as the other area high schools, but we were as diverse in other minority groups as everybody else.

Thats something I never got either, I mean besides the people of slavic decent, almost everbody that immigrates here is from a warmer or more tropical climate, why on earth pick Minnesota? they're misserable, though some of my tibetan friends were kind of prepared. But most of the latino population hibernates in the winter, they can't stand it. Good thing I was raised by those of western european stock who love everything related to snow or else I'd be screwed up here in the north lands

well, nobody "black" has said anything- since my best friend as a kid was black i was pretty much raised in a black family. i guess that makes me the african descent representative, even tho my a$$ is so white sometimes they call me in on foggy nights to help land planes with my britches down on my knees. no, that's (b-R-itches.) yup it's true. pay's good too.
i would imagine that most black folks got more sense than to do this . but beyond that they also scar much differently than white folks. they keyloid(sp?) much easier so a burn mark could be for life. it would take a pretty ballsy african american to do fire. so much respect to those of you out there.

oh by the way. that's crazy somehow i thought you were someone else i know from houston. (land of cocaine and fake breasts)
but gimme a break my joke's still funny, right?
i mean, it's not like you guys have a thriving african scene there in jolly england, huh?

about the trance. all of the trancers that i know that do fire were introduced to it through more tribal/ ethnic performers. it has been around the islands of new zealand, indonesia, hawaii, etc. for much longer than electronic trance has even existed. it spread from there by travelers that learned it from the native dancers. then it got picked up by their friends, and people that those travelers met. i don't really know much beyond that. infact all of that is just from my own experience and could be totally wrong for your part of the world. what's interesting to me is the current integration into honkey society. things sure are interesting!!!

Interesting question.
I know of two blacks who spin, but niether are really dark. One has the beautiful cafe au le complexion that is typical in the West Indies. The other must be the lightest South African without being white that I have ever seen!

I am teaching comets lately one of my students is Yemenite, two are black and one is Egyptian but admittedly most are caucasion.

Arashi, I think it is balsy (and stupid, I admit I am stupid) for anyone to responsibly do fire really and even more so to do it irresponsibly!

Arashi,

The keloid remark is interesting, but honestly, I don't see your run-of-the-mill Joe Black being that much more careful in general.

It is true that African-Americans (and specifically people of West African descent, most of whom were brought here by the slave trade, not all Blacks are African-American and not all people of African descent are from West Africa) are more likely to get keloids when they are injured, while keloids are almost unheard-of amongst caucasians and Asians. Having said that, the vast majority of African Americans do not get keloids.

But let's look at the subcultures where firespinning is common. I see a lot of hippies who spin fire and a lot of ravers who spin fire (let's not get into a discussion of sterotypes and compartments and such...I think we all get the general gist I'm getting at here). Both of these scenes are predominantly white and/or Asian. I don't think there's any racial reasons why you never see a certain race spinning color. I think it's just cultural exposure.

I dunno. I just do the stuff I do. I'm not color-blind. I can see just fine, thanks. I just believe that the color of my skin shouldn't have anything to do with the decisions that I make and the color of other peoples' skin shouldn't have anything to do with the way that I treat them. Everyone deserves my respect and courtesy until proven otherwise, whether they are black, white, or any other color. Unless they're yellow. That's jaundice. Then they get a referral to a hepatologist.

yeah that's where you get to the nitty gritty, because it has BECOME predominantly asian and caucasian. that is because it first was native, then gypsy freak travelers hanging wit the natives, then gypsy freak travelers have to make money dancing, so, they play at dance parties wherever they go and get paid so they can eat, or just play for fun and share, then ravers pick it up. and here we are. at each step along the way each group has evolved together, and each now has their own subgroup in this society. there are even more lineages, i'm sure, like with the olympics thing, but i don't know any of it. not that there are ANY lines here or anything i'm talking purely historical here.

i guess in spite of being such a small community in tampa, we are a diverse one. there are several dark and really dark fire performers here.

what my question is... has anyone ever seen a WOMAN firedancer?????

okay okay! thank the stars for Home of Poi because there ARE female fire dancers, including graceful firedancing froggies but in tampa, hmmm, let me count. 3?? maybe 2 female firedancers, and one just joined our ranks a few months ago.

Wow
