hey all, im new here @ forums, and also new at poi/fire poi/fire twirling, whatever it is called^^
My story : Im dutch, 16 years old, and In summer-holidays I went to thailand, and I saw alot of guys doing the "poi" stuff.
I thought it was cool, and I bought a set of poi there. they look alot like these: https://www.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~morschh/fotos/poi/pois.jpg

Now, few weeks later, I'm at home, and kinda practising..
Im much of a "newb" in doing poi, so I went on the internet, to find out a thing or two about poi, and thats how I got to this site.
I can do a few moves now,
-2bt weave^^ FW and BW
-The Butterfly , but how I do the butterfly is different than in vids, mine are "split time" if its called like that. cant do the original butterfly i think ( havent tried to learn it )
-I can turn myself 190 degrees when spinning ^^(not the reel turns move)
-I can do some "thingy"move : first both of them horizontally above my head, next turn in front of me, next turn horizontally above head, etc..

soo I need some advice of you guys, about everything:
-have i got the right poi?
-what new moves should i try to learn?/what move of me should be improved
-etc... advices

heh, tryed to practise the 3 beat weave, but it looks like [censored] i think ^^.
this is how I do it : i do 3 beat weave to the right, but then a chain of poi gets wrapped around arm, so I continue doing the weave to the left, but becuz the left poi is wrapped around my hand, I do a 5 ,6 , or 7 beat weave accidentally to the left^^

before posting too much it might just help if you looked around the forums and learnt to use the [Old link] option as you may find some of your questions have already been anwsered by people in old threads.

Watching the videos here and online tutorials helped me loads when I started to learn. Just enjoy the process and go with the flow! The 'meet others' section might help you find local workshops and meets you can go to as well.

This thread is full of dutch people...

the Dutch Spinners list from Holland, the Netherlands

If you go to search and type in 'dutch' ask it to search in first posts only (subject and body) and voila!

Hope this helps! By the way, 5 beat weave is really hard! Have a go, but if you get frustrated you might want to try something else.

Hmmm.. So, you're starting off, eh?

By the looks of your poi, one mistake must hurt you...

I do not have much advice, but more of something to tell you. While you learn poi, you may get discouraged by not being able to do a move. But, let me assure you, learning a move is a very proud experience, one you have probably felt already with that 3 beat weave.

If you need any advice on a specefic move, do not be afraid to PM me or make a forum (just make sure it hasnt been made wink) I wish you the best of luck, man.

Us Hoppers are always here to support ya!

Take care

Thx, and yea, They hurt when they hit me^^

especially in the face (once a bleeding nose , second time a bleeding lip wink) or in the nuts ^^

And im indeed feeling kind of proud when learning a new move:D.

im learning the 5bt weave now btw, and I can do it , but im not doing it correctly I think. I do it like this :

left hand : 3 to right , 2 to left

right hand : 3 to left , 2 to right

and I've read that its supposed to be opposite :

left hand : 3 left , 2 right

right : 3 right , 2 left

my hands also get tangled a bit, but when doing the 5btw weave to the left, they untangle.

Greetz, Boaz

(BTW, I think I need to learn how to link moves to each other. I know how to do some moves/tricks separately, but now how to combine them... advice plx?^^)

edit: also a question bout' butterflys, Im not rly good in them, and when I do them, they are not spinning completely vertical... and when I try to do them more vertical, they hit each other, and then my butterfly is [censored] smile

So I think I get what I do wrong, I have to do some kung-fu [censored] with my hands so they still:-

-spin vertically

-DONT hit each other

Hi xera and welcome to HoP.

There are a few places on-line other than HoP that have poi lessons that could help you.

Try Mot's place or the do more poi site. I found both of those sites helpful when I started out.

There is a thread in the events section [Old link] thats will let you know of meets going on in Holland and let you see who else is around and about in your area. Put a post in there and see who replies. Learning poi is so much easier and so much more fun when you have someone to learn with and from.

The poi you have look ok, but you might find it easier to learn with sock poi. Just get a long pair of socks and weight the ends with some lentils or dried beans until they weigh about the same as your fire poi. Tie knots in the top end to make handles. You then have a cheap set of practice poi that hurt less when they hit you.

Good luck hug

That was frightening... >.<

A really simple way to understand the Five Beat Weave is by doing a spiral wrap, but not wrap the poi on your hand, instead you move the spiral wrap from your right to your left side.

This is basically a Five Beat Weave

For your butterfly, I'd say you should have one hand a bit higher, (preferably 8 inches) and try it then. Once that works out for you, break down the inches. You must learn how to not let it collide.

Well, learn how to spin your Three Beat Weave from foward to reverse with a 180 turn of your body. It may seem a tad tough, but I believe all you need is a little practice, nothing much.

That move should get you uinderstanding your fluidness and flexability, don't be afraid to mix it up by exaggerating that turn from a simple 180 turn, maybe change it to a turn in which your hands that hold the poi rest near your arm pit.

Just adventure out in the world of poi! We'll be here to help you.

Speaking of which, my little explanation of those moves dont seem to be enough, I might be able to do more, but I am very busy.

Take care
