Alternative fire colouring method?

Alright. The common method is finding the right material that will dissolve in methylated spirits or some other alcohol-based solvent. However, what if we looked at not the fuel to change - but the wick?

Would it work if I got a water-based solution, saturated it with some sort of salt, then allowed it to dry at least 75% and then flood/soak it with alcoholic fuel?

tl;dr

1. Saturate a salt-water solution
2. Soak wicks with salt-water solution
3. Let salt-water solution evaporate so that you have salt-wicks
4. Soak wicks with alcohol
5. Test if it works...?

EDIT!
I am well aware that this is not the most efficient, possibly the least, method usable, but it is an alternative in case anything is preventing normal methods from being used.
