Greetings All:
My name is Jay. I found this site by searching "Poi Lessons" on google. I looked it over and saw that HoP seems to be a great site which offers quite a bit of valuable information and tutorials all in one place and all in a progressive order (If that makes since
). I began spinning poi around 7 or 8 months ago. Well sort of spinning poi then. The truth is I bought a few glowsticks and tied some sting to them and began just swinging them around in the air with no rhyme or reason to it all. This lasted for a few months I think.
I would get fresh sticks and crack them at night, turn off the lights and then twist and turn my arms in the air to the music how ever felt right. Then at the end of each "session” I would throw my stick in the freezer and repeat it all again the next night. This very simple form of poi soon became a way for me to clear my head of the days B.S. and almost meditatively ponder the days events. The day finally came when I wanted to know the secrets behind the patterns and designs I would see other more accomplished poi artist make at raves and I began to ask others how I could learn.
At around month two of poi I logged on to youtube and did a search on glowsticking. I learned the very basics and became a member of Glowsticking.com. Now as I have already said I’ve been spinning now for approximately 7 or 8 months. And in that time I have come along way from the Noobie I once was, but I still am amazed by the things I see done with poi be it glowsticks, Flow Lights, Fire or anything else.
And with that being said, I am about to run spell check, post this thread and go spin my lights to some Infected Mushroom.

nice start to poi! mine was similar, I saw this guy at a campsite I was staying at spin some glowsticks so the next day I hitch hiked into the nearest town to buy some tennis balls hitched back and then raided tents around me for guy ropes while everyone was off rock climbing, attached them to the balls and then started spinning them over my head really fast.
I stayed at that camp for a month or so, and all I did every night was pour glow stick juice on my tennis balls and twirl them around while the guy I saw on the first night gave me some pointers. I eventually wanted to stop hitting myself so I hitched back into town to goggle for lessons!

sticks and stones my break my bones, but ski patrol will save me.
