Literaly. This happened yesterday. Making hyperloops easy for me was all in the kind of poi I was using.
I started to learn this with typical 'comet poi'
i.e thin strings (picture cord usually) and light heads with tails that slowed their travel.
Bad, bad, bad for doing hyperloops. The heads were too light have to be constantly pushed to keep up their momentum. The strings were so thin that it required extremely precise placing of the tangle to even pull off a half assed hyperpoop. (the only word for what I was doing). Finally the were too smooth and didn't grip eachother at the tangle when I pulled on the stings. When you start to nail these hyperloops you'll know what I mean.
I've been trying different things and finally it was the most simple solution that solved the problem. SOCK POI. I used long sports socks(almost knee length) and nice heavy heads (rubber balls), about twice as heavy as a tennis ball. One tight knot just above the ball to keep it pushed down the end and another knot at the top of the sock to hold on to. Just swing like mad for a while to stretch the material a little and voila, my favourite poi after two years of swinging.
Advantages, nice thick grippy 'string', heads keep momentum without bother and you can make new ones in one minute, literally.
It took me two months with the other poi to learn one hyperloop. Yesterday I learned four new one s in an hour. Joy.
Don't ever buy crappy poi again!!!!!

you don't need a knot to hold your weight in your socks down.. centrifugal force will do that... and hackey sacks (or beads in general) weigh the socks down pretty good while at the same time preventing pain from getting hit.. hehe... and yes more weight plus the air resistance does help slow the poi a lot for hyperloops...
how to do a hyperloop? let your poi connect.. (preferably mid chain).. keep your hands still when you do this.. the poi will spin around the new center pivot (where they connected) and you can bring that to the other side and it will unloop itself on the other side...

YEa sock poi do rock. An unintentional best kept secret me thinks...I know I wouldn't believe they any good till I tried them and came to the same conclusions. I think a knot near the head is good though cause it lessens the wind resistance way more.

Though, I would also add that I find hyperloops easiest to do with tennis balls on the end of string. Tennis ball poi just have so much more speed and the string holds together really well.
Although I can't do them, I can feel hyperloops with extra beats in the tangle are there because the balls spin so fast on contact.
They are also fantastic for airwraps near the handles.

I myself just dicovered sock-poi last week. I made me a pair after watching How to (make friends and influence lemmings) cause i was just that inspired! Still working on hyperloops though...

I have the danhyperloops video but unfortunately no way to upload it. Though, the dantutorial one has enough hyperloops to keep ya busy for a while anyway. Its a better video IMO.

Oh yea, practice, practice, and then some more practice. You must focus and visualize your objective. Sometimes it helps to imagine viwing the poi chains from above at the moment of impact, you would see an "X". Focus on getting your hands to be spaced a consistent distance apart and your planes correct for the moments of impact.
It mostly just takes lots of practice.

I recently found that I was getting much cleaner hyperloops if I gave the bottom poi a little 'flick' to speed it up the instant before they crossed. The hand on the bottom's poi tended to be the one that would loose momentum. But this is purely a cosmetic fix once you're already hyperlooping.

Hey people

And, to add to the frustration, the poi heads keep slamming my forearms and get bumped off their otherwise perfect course, or sort of perfect.
anyway, practise practise makes perfect and all that, but i wanna impress people with "stylish knots"

cant quite remember where though...and its annoying me.
so anyone know where that sample is from or has been used somewhere else

i don't like stretchy socks for tangling. Stretchiness does makes them easier to cleanly isolate, as it gives greater margin for error.
However it makes poi much harder to finely control due to the 'bounce'.
Another drawback is too much grip. When stretchy socks tangle, they often get a little more slack around the tangle itself, and the two pieces of material grip onto each other as the weave gets tighter (as in weave of the fabric, not weave as in the move).
as a result, stretchy socks tend to always be a little bit tricker to cleanly untangle.
i reckon that for tangles you want material that grips laterally (so the poi don't slide over each other) but doesn't grip when two pieces of material are pulled away from each other. Velcro poi would be very bad for tangles.
i've found that canvas and flanellette both work really well.
flanellette picks up dirt REALLY fast. But don't bleach flanellette poi, because they'll become terminally ill and eventually disintegrate
slidey materials like, bugger... um... that slidey material. Anyway, they're also cool, but act differently. They slide into and out of the nexus far more easily, which is an extra level of control to play with, but can happen accidentally and just look messy.
One thing about socks is that they aren't so good for tangled buzzsaw stuff, because they get twisted up. Although if you had handles with swivel joints that wouldn't be a problem...
